gingerbread houses 2013

毎年恒例になったジンジャーブレッドハウス作り。
今年は友達と娘ちゃんを招いて４人で作りました。
We made gingerbread houses this year too.
We asked our friends to joining us. 

昨日、ジュリと一緒にベイキングしてパーツを準備しておきました。
いやぁ、今年の準備は楽だった。ジュリがすごくいろいろできるようになっていてびっくりしました。
走り書きしておいた材料（今年もマーサステュワートさん）を読んで計量スプーンで量ってボウルに入れてくれたし、材料を入れる度に鉛筆でチェックしてくれたし、助かる助かる。
（写真の水槽の水がとても緑なのは、冬に太陽の光がどうしても当たってしまって、アルジー(細かい藻）がいっぱい。この間藻を食べる小さな魚とカタツムリを買って投入したのだけれど、まだ対策検討中。水槽を動かせばいいのだけれど。。。なので見苦しくてごめんなさい。）
Juliett and I baked house parts yesterday.
This year, I found that it was very easy to bake gingerbread when I had a great helper, Juliett! She read ingredients(by Martha Stewart) and measured them, checked when she measured and put in the bowl. What a great helper, my work wasn't much left. Lucky me! 

スパイスとモラセスいっぱい入りました。

友達の分も、すごくたくさん焼きました。

娘ちゃんの作りたいお家のデザインをメールで送ってもらってあったので、それを参考に大きいお家と、ジュリは今年は秘密基地みたいなのが作りたいというので、それもジュリのデザインに沿って。私はティピーを作ることにしました。
I asked my friend to send me her daughter's gingerbread house plan, and I made parts for them trying to make them look close to her plan. Juliett planned a secret hideout. I decided to make a teepee.

さて、今日の午後はお友達を招いて組み立てでした。

ジンジャーブレッドがおいしく焼けたので、生卵を使ったアイシングをつけることでお腹が痛くなるのを心配したり、食べたいのに我慢するのがもったいなくなり（私はカナダの生卵はなんとなく怖くて食べないため）、主人にお願いして買ってきてもらった市販のアイシング（フロスティング）をはじめて使ってみることに。これだと卵よりは安心かな。そして子供たちがなめたくなったらなめられるし、アイシングのついたジンジャーブレッドも食べれるし。正解でした、しっかりとくっつきました。
We assembled parts together this afternoon. Usually we use egg white for strong icing(glue) to build houses, but we tasted the gingerbread and they were good, I didn't want to give up eating just because we used raw egg for icing(I love eating raw eggs in Japan but not in Canada), so I asked Col to pick some icing cream "Betty Crocker Creamy Deluxe Frosting" up at the supermarket. And the icing cream worked well! I have never bought frosting cream before, I was glad that it was strong enough and also we didn't need to worry that girls lick raw egg icing.

おしゃべりをしながらの組み立てはとっても楽しかった。
子供たちも飾りをつまみながら、アイシングをなめながら、頑張って組み立てていきました。ジュリは全部一人で秘密基地を組み立てました。娘ちゃんはママと一緒にとってもかわいいお家を作りました。
We all had a lot of fun, girls did a great job building their houses, sometimes(often) licking frosting and eating decorations. ;) My friend and her daughter helped each other and made a cute house with colouful decoration, Juliett did all by herself and I was very happy about that(she was too), my teepee was very easy.

子供たちはやっぱり組み立て終わるとプレイモービルに夢中。友達は私のマシンガントーク（しかも興奮してるから文法もめちゃくちゃ英語）にずっと付き合ってくれて、いろんな話を山ほどしました。楽しかった～！
Girls had fun playing with Playmobil, I had super fun chatting with my friend, she is a great listener, I couldn't stop talking, there were tons of things I wanted to talk about, my English was terrible with excitement but she was patient and understood me. :) It was a great time. 

娘ちゃんがのせたキャンディーはカラフルでとってもかわいかった。

ジュリの秘密基地の名前は「ジュピター」だそう。

プレイモービルの鹿たちに友情出演願いました。

今年の初めに図書館で偶然会った友達と娘ちゃん。
ラッキーなことに家が近くだとわかって、それから一緒にウォーキングに行ったりプレイデートをしたり、他のお友達も交えてランチをしたり、彼女たちの出会いで私たちの生活も華やいで、しかもお互いにクラフトや編み物が趣味だから刺激もし合えて、すごく嬉しい出会いでした。
ジュリは娘ちゃんのことを「いちごみたいに可愛くて愛おしい」と言います。慕ってジュリを見つけると走って近づいてきてくれる娘ちゃん。お互い一人っ子同士、いい関係が築けています。
来年もいろんなことを一緒に楽しめますように！フレンドシップに感謝。
Since we met them in the library in January, we have had fun together. We did playdates, walks, lunches, and crafts. We are so lucky to have met them, my friend is a great crocheter and good at crafts, and also a great mom, I got inspired by her a lot through the year. Her daughter is "sweet as a strawberry" (by Juliett) , she is so adorable and a wonderful child. Juliett really likes to play with her. We are thankful for our friendship.

ブログを書けなかった今週のいろいろを。
I'll write about this week. I don't think I had been busy but I didn't have time to write a post this week.

ジュリは月曜日と水曜の夜中とにお腹が痛くなって、どうやら寝ている間に布団を全部蹴ってるのと、パジャマのお腹のところがめくれてしまっているのが原因かも。。。ということで、主人の仮装に使ったふわふわでストレッチのある布を縫って、腹巻を作ってあげました。
Juliett had stomach ache twice at night time this week, I thought maybe because she kicks all blankets while she is sleeping and also I sometimes see her pyjama top flips and she shows her stomach, so she gets cold and that makes her stomachache.
I sewed Haramaki(a stomach warmer?) for her.

すっごく暖かくて気持ちがいいんだと言って今日は学校にもして行きました。
お腹痛いのも治まって安心。
I used the same fabric that I made Col Fin's hat for his Halloween costume. Very soft and stretchy. She likes it so much, she even wore it to school! She hasn't had stomachache since, so I am glad about it.

風がすごく強くてジュリと涙目になりながら学校に行った日、ジュリはナナが送ってくれたフリースのネックウォーマーがあって、それを目の真下までつけているから大丈夫だったけれど、私の作ったばかりのネックウォーマーはやっぱり予想したとおり編み目から風が抜けてとても寒かった。

なので、もうジッパーが壊れてしまったヨガ系ジャージを切ってネックウォーマーの内側に縫い付けました。
そしたら、すっごく暖かい。こんなちょっとした工夫で暖かさがこんなにも変わるんだとびっくりしました。
I found that my neck warmer I knitted last week wasn't warm or protective enough on a windy day, so I cut a piece of fabric from my old yoga jacket and hand sewed onto inside of the warmer.
It worked amazingly well! It became so warm! I was very surprised how it has changed by adding a piece of fabric.  

今日、日本の弟夫婦からジュリに誕生日プレゼントが届きました。
中には１歳３ヶ月になるジュリの大切ないとこ、私たちの甥っ子君からのメッセージと手形と写真が。あぁぁぁ～かわいい！
We received a parcel from my brother family. It was mainly for Juliett, their belated birthday card had her cousin's hand print, photo, and some writings. So adorable!
 

ジュリが「ジブリのものが欲しい」と言ったのを聞いて、トトログッズを中心にいっぱい送ってくれました。家族３人で興奮してしまったのはこの「トトロからのおみやげ石」。なんて気のきいた商品を作るんだろう、日本というところは。離れて本当に強く感じます、質もいいし、きれいでしっかりしていて、きちんとしていて、かわいかったり美しかったりおしゃれだったり。
トトログッズの入っていたラッピングだって、トトロのあの雨の日のお土産のように葉っぱの形をしたバッグだったし、すごいよ日本、すごすぎるよ。
Juliett received some Totoro(which Juliett became for Halloween) goods from them. All products were very wellmade and I was very impressed by them. I am so proud of Japanese products, they have tons of neat, stylish, great quality, cute and pretty things.

主人や私にまでギフトを入れてくれて、ありがとうね。
They sent Col and me gifts as well.

今週、学校では去年もすごく楽しかったリーディングナイトと言うイベントがあり、夜、教室をいくつか開けて、先生方がクリスマスのお話を読んでくれたり、クラフトを作ったりしました。ジュリはクラスメートのお友達と一緒に回ってとっても楽しそうだったなぁ。帰り際には今年も校長先生から参加者１人１冊ずつ本をプレ ゼントしてもらって、待ちきれずに帰り道、歩きながら本を読んで帰りました。
Juliett attended her school's fun event, family reading night. We attended it last year and we loved it, so we were looking forward to it. She had a great time with friends and teachers, listening Christmas stories and doing fun crafts. Everyone received a book at the end of the event. It was a lot of fun and I really appreciate the school and teachers there.

そんなジュリと私は、先週街のスリフトストアで１冊１ドルで買ったハリーポッターシリーズ、時間があると夢中で読んでます。２年生になってジュリの読書レベルはぐんぐん上がり、毎日宿題に持ってくる本の文字数や難しい言葉の多さからして、多分彼女はこれらの本を自分ですらすら読めちゃうし、私よりスムースに上手に読むんだと思うけれど、これは私も一緒に読みたい！と、子供のように私がお願いして、今のところ私が読み聞かせてます。（マミィ、私自分で読むよ、と言われるのも時間の問題？）

I found 3 Harry Potter series books at a thrift store last week and I have been reading the first one with Juliett. I know that Juliett can read them by herself without any problem, actually she would read better than me, but I wanted to read at least the first book to her. :) She is very interested in the story(me too), I told her that I have been to King's Cross stations many times, she was "wow!". :)

はまりやすい私たち、フクロウが手紙を運んでくれたらなぁ。呪文を言ったら食卓に食事が並ぶなんて夢みたいだね、壁に飾ってあるアートが話しかけてきたらどうする？キングスクロス駅は何度も行ったことがあると自慢したら（大人気ないが）すごいよ！すごいよ！って。 もう、わくわくです。
We get influenced so easily from movies and books, we have been talking about what if an owl bringing us mail, if I say some magic words and gorgeous dinner suddenly appears, and if photos and arts on the walls started to talk.  It is so much fun. 

ジュリはクラスで今週サンタクロースにお手紙を書いたそうです。
コピーを（原本は「北極」に送ってあるので）見せてもらったら、いっつもむちゃくちゃ字が汚いジュリは私に注意されてばっかりなんだけれど、これはすごく丁寧に書いていて驚きました。そしたら、「そりゃそうだよ、サンタクロースに書く手紙はきれいに書かなきゃと思ってね！」ですって。なんだ～！やればできるんじゃん！
ちなみに、「北極の生活では冷蔵庫は必要ですか？クッキーはどんな味のが好きですか。学校で私はすっごい頑張ってるよ、いじめられている子がいたら助けるよ。クリスマスにはアイポッドが欲しいです、でも無理だったらスパイか探偵のグッズをください、でも虫眼鏡は（いっぱいもってるから）やめてね。どうもありがとう。」と書いてあります。
This is a copy of letter to Mr. Santa from Juliett. She brought it home and show it to us.
I was very surprised by her beautiful writing, because usually she writes quite messily and I have kept telling her to write nicely.  She said, "The letter was for Santa! That's why I did super beautiful writing!!"

アンソロポロジーのウェブサイトでクリスマスショッピングの予習中、ケーブル編みの素敵なクリスマスストッキングを見て、私も同じようなのを作ろう！と思って先週アクリル１００％の糸を買ったのだけれど、ここまで編んだところで１００グラムの玉が終ってしまった。。。

続きを買えるのはクリスマス明け？うわぁぁ。。。山の生活は不便だぁ！と、ガックリ。
来年のクリスマスに飾りましょう。
I saw a beautiful cable knitted Christmas stocking at Anthropologie website a while ago, and I thought I could knit similar one. I bought a ball of 100% acrylic yarn last week in GP and knitted this much. I used all yarn but I couldn't finish it. :(
I guess I won't make it by this Christmas, this will be for next Christmas...I want Michael's in our town... (impossible.)

今日のおやつはジュリは私の叔父叔母から送ってもらっていたキャラメルコーンを。星の形が入っているなんて、これまた粋なことをしてくれる日本のお菓子に脱帽です。
私はこの季節の定番のざくろ、 光にかざすと宝石みたいにきれいで嬉しくなる大好きな果物です。食べ過ぎるとお腹がゆるくなるのだけれど、なかなか止められない。ひとつ２ドルくらいで買えます。
I have been eating lots of pomegranates for snack, I know I shouldn't eat too much(they make stomach uncomfortable), But it is one of my favourite fruits.
Juliett had a treat from my uncle and aunt. We like the cute package.

what I knitted in 2013

気がつけばクリスマスまであと２週間ちょい。は、早い～っ。
かなり焦ってきました。
ギフト作り、カード書き、学校のイベントにバタバタで、おそらくこの１２月に自分や家族に編み物をすることもないかなと思って、ずっとやってみたかったこんな写真、撮ってみました～！
It will be Christmas holidays within 2 weeks!
I have been writing Christmas cards, and knitting/wrapping some gifts.
Ahhhh... every days pass very quickly. I have lots of things I would like to do though. :(

１年間で編んだもの。
まずはお気に入り、編んでから愛用しているオートミール・クリーム・マスタード系の小物たち。
This is one thing from my to-do list, "take photos of what I knitted in 2013".

These are my everyday items, I wear the hat and felted mittens everyday, I use other items quite often too. I love them all!

アラン模様、もりもり。

そして、そのほか、いっぱい。
下のしましまアルパカは毎日フェルトのミトンの下に愛用中、真ん中のグレーと紺のミトンとその上のグレーの帽子は主人が毎日つけているし、真ん中上のバッグはジュリのお気に入り、ジュリの５本指の手袋も出番の多しです。（毒アザミはまだ出番なし。。。）
And more!
Col wears the gray and navy mitts and the gray hat every day. :)
Juliett wears the gloves often, she wears the bag very often. I wear the alpaca gloves everyday under the felted mitts.

もう少しありました。（追記）　まだもうちょっとあるかもしれないけれど。コースターとか失敗作とか。
I found four more. Maybe I have forgotten some more.

これらに加えて、友達にアルパカ５本指の手袋、母にも同じもの、あと帽子をプレゼントしたので、２６点かな。１年で作りました。編み物２年目、いろんな編み方に挑戦できました。
I gave a pair of gloves to my friend and my mom, I also gave a hat to my mom. So, I have knitted more than 26 items. this year. :)　

２０１４年はどんなものを編もうかな。細い糸でショールを編んでみたいな、なんて思ったり、ジュリにお洋服を編んでみたいな、と思ったり。
まだまだ知らない編み方がいっぱい、これからもどんどん挑戦したいです。
I am very looking forward to knitting more and more next year.
I would like to make a shawl with very thin yarn, I would like to knit clothes for Juliett.
I would like to try a lot of new patterns in 2014!

knitting with love

雪の降る日は家族でのんびり日曜日。
クリスマスカードを書いたり、整頓したり、洗濯したり。
Relax snowy Sunday at home.
I wrote some Christmas cards, did tidy up and laundry.

ジュリと主人はクリスタルの発掘に、夢中。
そんな２人を横目に、私はおやつのグラニースミス、キャラメルソースがけ。
Juliett and Col were busy digging crystals.
Juliett had a hard time breaking the hard clay which contained some crystals and asked Col to help her. Col loves that kind of activity, they were quite excited digging and finding crystals.
I watched them eating my favourite snack. :)

今回は少し手編みのプレゼントなどしてみようかと張り切ったものの、頑張ってもそんなに数が作れないことがわかりました。ブランケットとかを編んでプレゼントする人たちって本当にすごいなと思う、好きとは言え、編むのが早いとは言え、相当な力（愛と呼ぶのかも）と時間がないとあんなに大きいものはなかなかできないと思うのです。ブランケットじゃなくても、マフラーでもセーターでも、手袋でもそう。もともとある布を縫って形にする縫い物とはまた違って、糸から一目一目編んで形にする編み物って本当にすごいと思う、そこに強い魅力を感じます。
Because I were so into knitting through this year, I thought I could knit some gifts for friends but I found that I wasn't a quick knitter yet. And I thought people who knit/quilt big blankets for family or friends were so amazing, not only blankets, such as scarves, mitts, gloves, and sweaters, the time and power(maybe you call it 'love') they spend for them must be so much. 
Just a ball of string(yarn) turns into something that makes people warm, I think knitting is such a great art work, I am very thankful that I learned how to knit.
 

今年の自分への編み物のしめはこちら。
大活躍な日本ヴォーグ社の「アラン模様１００」から大好きな模様だけを集めてネックウォーマーを編みました。先週、本当にほっぺたと鼻が寒かったから。これなら首から目の下までカバーできます。１周、いろんな模様を入れたので、両方からの写真です。
中にフリースのライナーを縫ったら盛り上がった編み目の隙間もカバーできるかな。
Between knitting gifts, I knitted a neck(cheeks and nose) warmer. I just wanted to knit interesting Aran knitting patterns from my favourite book, it was a great practice, I might sew fleece liner to it and see how it works on a very cold day.

cold days...

今週は寒かった～！
マイナス３０℃くらいかなと思っていたけれど、町のインフォメーションセンターの人に「今朝は６時にマイナス３８℃までいったのよ」と教えてもらいました。道理で寒かったわけだ、今朝は、主人に学校に行く時にジュリをジュリの学校で落としてもらいました。
幸い風が強くなく、体感温度も３℃から５℃くらいしか下がらないので、迎えの時間はジュリと歩けました。（多分マイナス２８℃だったと思う）
こうなってくると、「マイナス２０℃なんて全然平気」、そう感じるようになるものなんですね、去年この町に越してきた時に、学校のお手紙で「風の強くないマイナス２０℃までは休み時間に子供たちは外で遊びます。」と書いてあったのを読んで、本気か？と思ったけれど、今じゃマイナス２０℃でしっかりコートを着ていればそれほど寒くないな、と思うのです。
It was -38C this morning...Col drove Juliett to school. :)
But Juliett and I walked home after school(-28C), it was sunny and it wasn't too bad.

さすがにマイナス２０℃以下で少し向かい風があったりすると、ジュリを送って家に着く頃には、鼻の穴はもちろん、まつ毛の目じり側が凍って重い、頬も痛くなって、息のかかる顔の横の髪の毛は凍って真っ白。
ちなみに、格好は、厚いウールの靴下に本気の雪用ブーツ、 ヒートテックレギンスの上にユニクロのフリースのライナーのついた暖パン、上は何か長袖の上にノースフェイスの本気ダウンジャケット、口にはスカーフを巻いて、頭は帽子、手は前にブログに載せたフェルト化させたミトンにアルパカ５本指手袋、これでかなり大丈夫です。毎朝のユニフォームです。
１週間ずっと朝から晩までマイナス２０℃って、すごいところに暮らしてるもんだなぁって思います。
ちなみに、この寒波はアルバータ州を襲ったので、他の街もすごい寒さだったようです。明日から和らいでマイナス１０℃台に戻るそうですが。
We have been having quite cold days, every morning when I walked back from school, I felt my eyelashes and inside of my nose froze.  

そんな今日は友達のおうちでプレイデート♪
クラフト大好きなママ同士なので、娘たちもオーナメント作り、しましたよ。
でも途中から遊んじゃって完成し切れなかったので、出来上がりの写真は続きの来週かな。お互いにクラフトが好きだから、材料になるアイディアは山ほどで、作り放題。友達は砂糖の入らないオーナメント用のクッキーまで焼いておいてくれました。
So, we did lots of things at home this week, I knitted and made some Christmas presents, wrote addresses on Christmas card envelops, Juliett opened some of her birthday gift and did activities.
Today we had a playdate with our friends and made some Christmas ornaments. It is always so fun to do things like that with friends! (My friend baked some dough for ornaments and kids painted on them, which was really a great idea.)

ジュリはとうとう楽しみにしていたプレゼントを開けました。
ナナとパパからもらった、クリスタル発掘キット。中に７種のクリスタルが埋まっているのをハンマーで崩しながら発掘します。
Juliett is so busy mining crystals. That is one of gifts she received from her Nana and Papa. What a perfect activity for her! She is looking forward to seeing what kinds of crystals she could dig out.

週末はクリスマスの準備を少ししようかなと。
恒例のジンジャーブレッドハウスも考えないと。

switched to Christmas season preparation

今日も太陽の両側に光、見えました。

昨日のパーティーの少し前から雪が降り始めて、大雪警報も出て、今朝起きたらまた新しい雪が１５センチほど積もっていました。
気温がかなり低いので、さらっさらの、蹴れば粉のように飛び散るし、頭や肩に乗ったら払えばぬれない、そういう雪です。
It started snowing before the party yesterday and it has been snowing since. 

テレビでは登校時マイナス２０℃で風が少しあるので体感マイナス２８℃、と言っていて、主人にジュリを送ってもらおうかなぁと思ったけれど、玄関先に出たら冷たい空気がすっと体に入って気持ちが良くて、しっかりとスノーパンツ、コート、スカーフ、帽子、２重の手袋を身につけたら、全然大丈夫。歩いていたら友達ママ＆娘ちゃんも歩いていて、おしゃべりしながら歩いたら楽しくって。
The weather forecast said that it was -20 and feels like -28 in the morning, so I was going to ask Col to drop Juliett off at her school but when we went outside to feel how cold it was, it wasn't as bad as I imagined, so Juliett and I walked to school with our friends. It was fun! Actually I felt fresh and nice some sharp cold air breathing in.

今朝はクリスマスの音楽をかけながら片付け開始。
I put away all the party decorations. I decided not to put those decorations in a garbage bag, I put them up in Juliett's room. 

ジュリの誕生日のデコレーションはジュリのお部屋に移動！みんなからのカードを全部飾りました、今日学校から戻ったらびっくりするだろうなぁ。と思いながら。ちょっと賑やか過ぎるのは承知。でも、ホリディシーズンなのでまぁいいかな。
I know it looks maybe a bit "too much" but I was sure she would like it, I hanged up all the cards too.

ジュリを学校に迎えに行ったら昨日パーティーに来てくれた女の子たちが集まってきて、「みんなからもらったカードを全部ジュリの部屋に飾ったのよ」と言ったら、「そんな嬉しいことをしてくれたの？」と喜んでくれました。ジュリももちろん家に着いてお部屋を見たら「この部屋、最高！」と、階段から転げ落ちそうになりながら嬉しそうに下りてきました。
When I went to pick Juliett up from school this afternoon, girls who came to the party yesterday came to me and told me the party was awesome. I told them that I hanged up their beautiful cards on Juliett's room's wall, they were so excited and showed us huge smiles.  Juliett went to her room when we got home, she was very surprised by her "party" room and came down the stairs so excitedly almost missed some steps, saying "My room is AWESOME!" :)

そして、クリスマスの飾りを（もう一度）出しました。
ここ数年同じものを出しているから何か変えたいなと思いつつ、これが私の好きな感じなんだよなぁなんて思ったりもして。何か新しいものに挑戦したいと思いながらも、好きなものを並べる自分にやっぱり年をとってきたなぁと感じました（多分いい意味で）。
So I again took out some Christmas decorations. I noticed that I haven't tried anything new, I always put the same things every year and I felt I was getting old, in a good way. :) It is so nice to have something I really like and look forward to have the season to have them around us.

アドヴェントカレンダーだって、もう本来、昨日からスタートしているわけで、慌ててカレンダーのポケットに入れるアクティビティーカードを書いて、ちょっとお菓子も入れて飾りました。
学校から配られたカレンダーも後半２週間はイベントいっぱいです。
It is December the second, I didn't prepare the advent calender for Juliett. I made those activity cards and put them in the pockets with some sweets as I did last year. I am glad that I made the calender last year.

大好きなクリスマスの本も本棚から出してバスケットに。
I took out Christmas books from our book shelves and put them in a basket by the couch to reach them easily.

美しい絵にいつ見てもうっとり。

そうだ、グリンチの本を見て思い出したけれど、先週には去年も行った町の中心部のデコレーション点灯式に参加してきました。風が強くて寒かったけれど、火を焚いていてくれて、町のカフェがココアとクッキーを配ってくれて、サンタさんとグリンチ氏も来て、子供たちは大喜びでした。
To see Mr. Grinch book, I remembered that we went to see the downtown lighting ceremony last week. Mr. Santa and Mr. Grinch were there to entertain children. A cafe served free hot chocolate and cookies, it was a very windy cold day but they made some fire and we enjoyed the fun, wintery atmosphere.

ジュリはグリンチ氏が怖くて隠れてました。（写真は多分近くに居るのに気づいていなかった。）
サンタさんにもキャンディーケインをもらってそれですたすた戻ってきました。もうあんまり「サンタクロース！」って感じではないのかしら、７歳児。もうそういう時期なのかなぁ。この間も「ねぇ、トゥースフェアリー（歯の妖精）って、ダディってことはないよね？」って突然聞いてきたりして、 微妙な年頃に入りました。
Juliett was scared of Mr. Grinch  and she was hiding from him mostly. She didn't seem excited seeing Mr. Santa either. Then I remembered that she suddenly asked if tooth fairies were parents the other day, maybe she is ready to be more realistic? She is seven years old. :)

今週はマイナス２０℃のあたりをずっとうろうろ、らしいです。
クリスマスの準備にはもってこいの天候です。
It sounds like we are having a cold week. It will be good for Christmas preparations.

Science Birthday Party!

今日、ジュリの誕生日パーティーを家で開きました。
We had Juliett's birthday party today.

４歳は「クラフト・パーティー」、５歳は「ティーパーティー」と、テーマを決めてきました。
今年のジュリのリクエストは、上の写真でわかるかな？
「ダディにいっぱい実験を見せてもらうサイエンスパーティー！」でした。
We did "craft party" for Juliett's 4th birthday, and "tea party" for her 5th, last year we just moved to this town so we had a family party. I asked what theme Juliett wanted to her 7th birthday. She said, "I want Daddy to show lots of cool experiments, so it will be a science party!".

２年生から授業に「理科」が加わって、楽しくて楽しくて仕方のない様子。聞いてみれば、ジュリの仲良しの友達もみんな理科が大好きみたい。今学期は水の変化やものの浮き沈みを勉強していて、実験をやるたびにその内容、思ったこと、延々と話をしてくれます。ということで、水の変化を主に取り上げて主人が実験を選んでくれました。
They started learning Science at school in Grade 2. It sounds like they LOVE science, lots of children told me what kinds of experiments they did and how cool and fun it was, which is really nice. 

招待状は毎年恒例、ジュリに絵をお願いしました。
ビーカーから液体がぼこぼこ溢れてます。こういうの、ほんと好きなんです。２年生。
Every year, Juliett draws pictures for the party invitation cards.
She drew this picture this year. (She wrote the title too.)

飾りつけはシンプルに、今回は黄色をパーティーカラーとして選び、実験エリアになるダイニングのところにつけました。
I made the decorations quite simple this year. Yellow was the(my) theme colour for this party.

パーティーは２時間。２時から３時２０分まで主人がいろんな実験をしてくれました。
お決まりのベイキングソーダと酢で二酸化炭素を出す実験、グロースティックの温度の変化を比べたり、外に出て化学変化の実験を２種、それに、生クリームとお砂糖を塩で冷たくした氷の中で振ってアイスクリームを作る、もう子供たちは大興奮。
虫眼鏡とセイフティー眼鏡とノートパッドと鉛筆をあらかじめ渡しておき、子供たちは実験の予想をしたり、見たものについての感想や結果を書いたり。
どの実験もすっごくすっごくすっごく楽しそうでした。
During 2 hours party, Col did 5 experiments and kids LOVED them!  We provided them safety glasses, magnifying glasses and a notepad with a pencil, so every time they tried/saw experiments, they wrote down what they saw and thought.

ケーキは、ジュリはフラスコの形がいいと言うので、ジュリのアイディアを。
子供８人と大人数人分、すっごく食べると思って、とっても大きなケーキを焼きました。（実際は作ったアイスも食べたし、他の食べ物もあるしで、３分の１余りました。）
ジュリは泡がぼこぼこフラスコから出ているのがいい、と言うのだけれど、難しくて。。。ちょっとシンプルすぎたかなぁ。
ジュリはすごく良かったというけれど、私としてはもう少し何か小技を効かせたかったところです。（中には定番の苺を挟みました）

Juliett wanted me to make a flask shaped cake, so I did.
I baked a big sponge cake last night, but after I baked it I started to worry if that was too small for 8 kids and some adults, so I baked one more. I felt like I was a baker! :)
It was difficult how to decorate the cake, maybe it was too simple, but Juliett liked it, so it was OK, I think.

あと、一応野菜（ミニ人参とミニきゅうり）、チーズ、メロン、あと、２色ゼリーも作っておいたので出しました。いっぱいいっぱいやりたいことあったけれど、またいつかの時に。
I served some veges, fruit, cheese, and colourful jello.

ちょこちょことためてきた黄色グッズが役立つ時がやってきました。黄色の水玉いっぱい。
Through the year, when I saw something yellow I bought it for someday, yellow napkins, yellow paper plates, yellow cups, and yellow candles. :)

みんなからいろんなプレゼントをいっぱいいただいて、パーティーはお開きです。
最後のお迎えを待つ時間に、マシュマロをパスタでつなげた「分子」作りをしました。
Juliett received lots of wonderful gifts from her friends. and it was soon 4:00. The time passes so quickly. While they were waiting for their parents to pick them up, they built some molecules with marshmallow and pasta.

パーティーに来てくれた子供たちにありがとうと、小さなおもちゃやお菓子の入ったお土産バッグを渡すのがこちら流。
今回は「実験」に使ったセイフティーグラスと実験結果を書くノート、虫眼鏡、あと、水につけておくと（おもちゃの）恐竜が生まれる卵、それに暗闇で光るグロースティックのブレスレットを入れました。（全部１ドルストアアイテムです。）
ジュリに「来てくれてどうもありがとう。」のメッセージを書いてもらって紙袋に貼りました。
I asked her to write thank you note for all the guests and glued them on the paper bags.
We got safety glasses, magnifying glasses, and notebooks for the activities, and added dinosaur eggs, and some glow sticks.

お友達からのメッセージ、みんな字を書くのがとっても上手になって、さすが２年生だなぁって思う。お友達が帰ってからジュリとゆっくり、一つ一つ目を通しました。時間をかけてこうやってカードを描いてくれるのってすごく嬉しい、ジュリにも機会あるごとにカードを書かせるようにしているから、こういう手作りのカードをもらうと様子が目に浮かんで特別な気持ちになります。
After all friends left, Juliett and I looked through all the messages. I love to see children's writings. Everyone did wonderful writing/drawing on their cards. Juliett loves writing and drawing cards too, and I love making cards too, so we really appreciate handmade cards. They will be Juliett's treasure.

私の友達の娘ちゃんは幼稚園生で、他のみんなが小学生なので、ママに残ってもらって一緒に楽しんでもらう予定でいたのだけれど、楽しんでもらうどころか、すごい手伝ってくれて、彼女なしではパーティーがうまく進まなかった、本当に助かりました。しかも、編み物上手の彼女、プレゼントとは別にジュリにお人形やヘアバンドを編んでくれて私が感動。
写真も撮ってくれました。このポストの写真、ほとんどが彼女が撮ってくれたものです。
あぁ、本当にありがとう！
Huge Thanks to my friend, J, who came to join to our party with her kindergartener daughter. I hoped her to sit down and have a cup of tea and have fun with us, but instead of that, we asked her to help us a lot during the party! Without her help we couldn't have this party so nicely organized. She also took lots of great photos(half of photos of this post were taken by her). She is a great crocheter. She made Juliett beautiful gifts. :)

「私の誕生日パーティーは世界で一番のパーティーだった！」と飛びきりの笑顔で私たちにお礼を言ってくれたジュリ。今まで引越し続きで誕生日の頃はいつも引越しして数ヶ月、知り合いも少なく大きなパーティーも開いてあげられませんでした。
この夏に引越しをしないでいいとわかった時、仲良しのお友達をたくさん呼んで今までで一番大きなパーティーを開いてあげようと思いました。 それが叶って、いつもジュリと仲良くしてくれているお友達とジュリのキラキラした笑顔をいっぱいパーティーで見ることができて、本当に嬉しかったです。
どの子もみんなすっごく優しくていい子達。そんなお友達に囲まれてジュリは幸せだと思います。
"It was the greatest party EVER!" Juliett said and thanked to Col and me after the party. I am so glad that she liked the party. As you know, we have moved many places every year and she was always a new student and didn't have many friends around her birthday(because we moved in summer), so when we knew we didn't move this summer I thought we would have a big party for her with many friends. I was so glad to see Juliett's and her friends smiles, laughs, and giggles during the party, so glad to see they had fun. They are really great friends, Juliett is very lucky to be friends with them.

そして、子供たちを上手にまとめてすっごく楽しい時間を作り出してくれた主人に感謝。彼、とっても生き生きしてたなぁ。そういう様子を見て嬉しかったです。生徒の年代は違うけれど、こうやって学校でも授業しているのかな、今日の主人はとてもかっこよかった。私は安心して準備に取り組むことができました。
And I thank Col who made this party AWESOME! He was fantastic. He was so good at getting kids' attention, introducing all the fun experiments, I know that is what he does every day at school but I thought he was wonderful.

さぁ！大きなイベントが終りました。
なんともう１２月。クリスマスに向けて気持ち切り替えてたまっていることを終らせないと。
師走、だからこそ、時間を大切に暮らしていきたいです。
Well, our big event was over.
And it is December! I have lots of things I have to do.
I know that especially days pass super quickly in December, I would like to spend every day nicely with appreciation.
