Welcome, her tooth fairy!

Finally! Juliett lost one tooth!

Juliett's classmates have already lost many teeth, she had been looking forward to this experience. When it came out, she was so surprised and also soooo happy!

She told me on the way home from school that she almost lost her tooth when she ate some pieces of apple for her snack at school, her friends told her to pull it out but she was too scared that she couldn't do it. Col got home and after supper he took a look at it and decided to pull it out. He tied floss to her tooth and tied the other end of the floss to a door knob(typical way, he and also I did when we were little). He asked her to push the door close, she was scared and she followed the door for the first time(that was so cute), then she pushed so weak for the second time, we were almost saying "that's too weak, you have to push strong!", she said " it came out!" and she was holding her tooth. :)

The next tooth is wiggling too. She will lose it soon.

Well, in Japan, when we lose baby teeth, we hope that we will get nice and healthy teeth and throw them. We throw upper teeth to the ground(under the floor) and lower teeth to the sky(to the house roof). But here we have Tooth Fairy custom in Canada.

Juliett was very busy writing a letter to her tooth fairy last night, something like she would give her tooth and she would like the fairy to give her a picture of herself(fairy). She promised to the fairy that she wouldn't tell anyone about it but her best friend who believes fairies so strongly. She loves fairies and she is so curious how her fairy looks like. She also wrote that she would protect her fairy from any bad wizards.

Her friend told her that she should put a glass of water by her tooth, because then when the fairy takes her tooth, her dress touch the water and water will get the dress's colour. Next morning she will be able to tell what colour her tooth fairy is to see the water colour....  Of course Juliett prepared a glass of water by her tooth. :)

This morning, at 6:00! I woke up with Juliett shouting something in her bed room.
"Mommy, Mommy! A tooth fairy came! She left a letter to me and come and look at this water! It's PINK!!! COME, COME TO MY ROOM, MOMMY!!!!!!!"

What an excitement! I was sleepy and didn't go then she came to our bed and jumped around...
I gave up and went to her room.

Her Papa gave Juliett a nice wooden tooth case a long time ago, we looked for it last night but couldn't find it around, so she put her tooth in a necklace case. By the case, there were a tiny letter sealed with wax and a 2 dollar coin, and the water had changed to pink.

I looked at the letter, it was written with beautiful hand writing and the writing was so tiny, I couldn't read it well, Juliett waited her Daddy woke up and then he read it to her.
It was something like, the fairy was so happy to see Juliett's beautiful first tooth, she was afraid that she couldn't show how she look by fairly rules, say hello to her best friend, keep teeth clean and she was looking forward to coming back to her again soon. Juliett was very happy.

She liked and she was curious about the pink water so much.
"Mommy, do you think I can drink it up?"
" If I drink it, would I be a fairy?"
"Maybe I will put my finger in it and see how it happens."
"Wow! It is pink water, but on my finger it is clear! It's a magic! It's a magical water!'
"Hmmm... it doesn't taste anything. My finger is OK too. nothing has changed."
"I want to keep it forever, Mommy, do you have a bottle?'
"Thank you, see? I am like a scientist! Daddy! Daddy! Look at me! I am a scientist!"
.... what a morning. :)

I looked at my old blog posts when Juliett just got 4 teeth, at that time the teeth looked quite big to her mouth but when she got her tooth out yesterday, it was so small in her hand.
She hasn't had any cavities, I hope she keeps her teeth healthy and nice for a long time.

As she is growing, I am getting old too, I found 5 white(gray) hair yesterday too!

sorry, Jamie. I have been a bit lazy...

I haven't done Jamie's recipes for a while.... I have been lazy.
Well, if I can make an excuse, I would say that we don't eat so much meat and we can't get fresh fish or interesting vegetables or herbs around, also we don't use so much oil in our meal, we prefer to eat fresh or just boiled...too many excuses!

But, since I started making something from his recipe books, I have had many vegetables and herbs I hadn't had before and I really appreciate it. I won't quit, I will keep trying little by little (especially in Summer ).

I made Swiss chard frittata recently that was really yum, I always have mint, I have used fennel bulbs and beets for salads many times.

I made kale chips before, I bought kale again and made pasta with caramelised onion, garlic, kale and lemon. It was good, Juliett and Col liked it. I am not a big fan of olive oil based pasta but usually I make tomato based or cream based so it was a good difference.

Then I tried another oil based pasta with broccoli, olives, capers, tuna and lemon. That looked good but we didn't like it. I thought tuna, olives, and lemon gave good flavours, but we all didn't like capers.

I bought the table mats at Simons for $1.99 each. I usually sew table mats but I can't make the good ones for $1.99. It was a good deal and I liked the simple colour.
Simons is quite new, I heard that the store in WEM was the first one in west side of Canada. I am not so interested in their clothing but it is always fun to see and walk around in the store.

Talking about new stores... we have Target in GP. We went to see it last month. It was nice, bright, and clean. Juliett likes the TV CM (the dog one) and she was excited going to Target for the first time that was quite strange for her who dislike shopping.

I saw her drew this picture.
Cute, walking to Target holding a purse and a chocolate bar...hope she won't be a shoppaholic in the future. ;)

living with wild animals

Last week, my friend who does school volunteers with me a lot took me for an hour hiking with her dogs. It was only 10 minutes walk away from our house, but suddenly we were walking in the beautiful nature, I hadn't explored that area yet, so it was a big surprise and I liked the walk very much. She saw a fox family the other day on this hill, I saw many wild flowers blooming and I really liked this view. I wanted to bring Col and Juliett there, so we went for a walk after supper yesterday.

Juliett was excited seeing the tiny flowers. She saw lots of wild roses too and said she must come to see and smell roses when they are blooming.

My friend often walk with her dogs and she has actually seen a bear, so she really well prepared, she had her backpack on her back, each side pockets on it, she had a bear spray and a bear horn, she also had a bear bell.

Prairie Smoke
We walked 5km on the day, I saw pretty streams and beautiful views from a clearing. We are definitely sure to come to this trail on Summer holiday.

Well, today I am going to write about bears, but I will put photos of wild flowers we saw when we walked in the woods yesterday.

On Friday, a man from Alberta Fish and Wildlife office gave a talk about "Wildlife Awareness" at the tourist centre and we all went to listen to him.

Since I have heard that there were many bears around the town, I have been scared and worried if we encounter a bear someday.
It was really nice to know about bears and know what to do if it happened to us. There are no manuals how to, but to have knowledge is important and also gives me a bit confidence.
(I will write about bears below, but this is what I learnt, if you are planning to go into bear area, please learn by yourself.)

What I learnt was that we are not living in the area we see many bears, but we are actually living in and sharing their territories. About 60% of  Alberta grizzly bears are in this area, and we have black bears too.

People say that "play dead when you see bears" in Japan, but what I learnt was it depends on the situation. Yes, stay quiet to curious or defensive bears, but do not play dead when you encountered a predator bear.

Field Pussytoes?
Bears are scared when people come in their personal space and that's why they might attack people to protect themselves, but before attacking people, usually they give some signs to let them know they were too close to them. Such as, stomping ground really hard, standing up and clapping hands or making noises, barking like a dog. When you see a bear doing the sign, you are in their personal area and should leave immediately(but no run), hands up and talk to the bear with low voice, walk backwards slowly without eye contact.

If you are attacked by the curious or the defensive bear, do bear spray, bear horn, , if they are still attacking you then you lay flat on the ground, stomach down and put hands around back neck, legs open, even bears try to roll you over, put your stomach to the ground to protect important organs. Even the bear lost interest in you, you shouldn't move soon, sometimes bears are around and watching you for hours.

The other kind of attacks are predatory attacks, they won't give you any notices, they quietly sneak up like a cat.
If the bear is attacking you, of course you shouldn't "play dead", they would eat you up. You have to fight back with anyways. Cougars are the same, if they attack you, they attack to eat you(usually children).
But he said that predator bears and cougars were rare.

Bear spray is very effective, but only works within about 4m, bear horns make surprise bears, you could climb a tree but then you have to climb as high as you can (maybe about 20m) because bears can climb trees so well and high.

If a bear is following you (not aggressively), you might put something(hat, jacket, or something you have) on the way and get the bear's attention to it, but do not leave your backpack because if the bear started attacks,  the backpack will give you extra protection.

Col has encountered bears twice. Once he was sitting and talking with his friends(in a group of 4) during his summer job for his university in a forest, one of them noticed that a bear was standing a far behind them(15m away), so they told the bear go away and it went away.

The second, he was walking with his buddy in the forest after the job, they noticed two cubs go up a tree, there was a mom bear too, so Col and his buddy slowly backed up about 200m and made some noise. The cubs climbed down the tree and about 5 minutes later the mom bear and cubs came towards them(Col and buddy) and coming closer, so they backed up more, she was still sniffing and following, and they kept walking and making sure their bear sprays were easy to access, they were talking what to do and kept walking, when they looked back to make sure the distance between the mom bear and themselves, the bear was about 3m behind them, they dropped their hats and while the bear was sniffing them, they backed up more, the bear kept following them but later it lost interest and went back to the forest.

We should not misunderstand about bears. Bears usually don't care about people, when they feel scared or curious, they might attack people to protect themselves. They just need to eat and they are thinking about food and also cubs and females this season, if people are in their territory and annoying them, it is natural for them to feel scared. If unluckily people are standing between cubs and a mom bear, the mom bear of course think to protect her cubs from the people.

So when they have enough food around, they don't care about people even they are quite close to them. If they haven't got any food for a while, they are really irritated and in bad temper.

They have a rule that they have to kill the bear that had physically contacted to human in Alberta. They don't want to kill bears if they can, so we need to live with them with knowledge and act smartly when we saw a bear.

Bluebells
Don't need to be scared. To respect bears and wild lives in the forest is very important. They are wild and there is no manual book for treating them but knowing about them helps and gives confidence to live with them in Rocky mountains.

He also said that walking in groups was good too, when we hike we should walk in a big groups.

It was a really interesting talk, I was glad to have the chance to hear his stories, he told us many examples people encountered bears around this town. That made me to think this is really real that we are so close to bears. Also I thought we were lucky to be in the beautiful nature with lots of wild animals.

We are definitely buying a bear spray and a bear horn before we start hiking this summer.

After the short walk, Juliett looked up "North American Wildlife" book and looked for the wild flowers we saw on the field. We found "Prairie Smoke", "Bluebells" and "Field Pussytoes" but couldn't find other white flowers. We also heard many birds singing, we are looking forward to hiking around the town in summer time.

colours! / a fun playdate

Juliett brought this umbrella craft home from school, I like the pretty flowers.
I don't know why but she asked me to put upside down.  :)

I recently found that my stomach didn't get upset having some(maybe a cup of) milk once or twice a week. So, after I come back from volunteering for Juliett's class, I make this strawberries & milk with a bit of sugar and that is my treat these days. This is my favourite way to eat strawberries, I do love to eat them fresh, without anything but I also like this way, I have kind of given up eating this since I found that I might be a lactose intolerance. I am so happy to eat it as a treat twice a week!

I bought this colander in Edmonton. I was so glad when I found it, a perfect colour for my kitchen!
I think it would be so beautiful if I had lots of lemons in it. This week lemons weren't on sale, but we bought many Granny Smiths and nectarines. They look good in it too. Of course, I am also going to use it as a "colander" not only as a "decoration". ;)

Juliett had a fun playdate with her good friend this afternoon. They had lunch together.
I was happy to make the playdate a bit special, I served cold water in my French lemonade bottle! (that I learned at the fancy cafe in Edmonton)

They had pancake and this was leftover pancake I had. It was so good to eat it with cooked apple with some cinnamon and syrup on.

During four hours playdate, they played themselves mostly, I served the lunch and snack at the deck(tea party style) and helped this craft. They decorated simple photo frames.

Juliett had lots of playdate last year with her best friend in the village, but since we moved to this town she hasn't had many playdates at home yet. I was glad to hear their giggling and laughing all the time.

"It wasn't a good time, it was a FANTASTIC time!" she said to me after her friend left.
I was happy to hear that. I was glad that they both had a fun time.

We went to the post office and I received a parcel from one of my friends in Japan. She sent me letter, photos she took when we got together in March and some goodies for Juliett and this beautiful Fukagawa porcelain(Arita yaki) box.
I love their elegant and beautiful, also traditional designs, I have given their products to my friends for their celebrations, or to my friends and family abroad. I have some for myself, they are quite expensive and very special to me.
Everytime I use these porcelains (for special occasions), I am proud of Japanese products, traditions, and designs, and I also feel I am happy being Japanese. Japan has so many wonderful traditional things, such as kimono, origami, porcelains, and foods. I would like to cook good Japanese foods too.

Juliett the flower fairy

It's June. The last month of Grade 1 for Juliett. We received a schedule calender of this month from her class, it had lots of fun events on it. Juliett is so excited about parties and a field trip.
I hear "camping", "vacation", "holiday" often in conversations, the mountains got less snow on top of them, trees got many green leaves. I remember that a few weeks ago we said "finally Spring has arrived" but now it is a kind of Summer already. Our spring was quite short!

They learned about fairy tales last week and they had their "fairy tale party" at their class this week. Children were allowed to go to school in fairy tale costumes, Juliett went in her fairy costume that she wore on 2011 Halloween.
She loves fairies, she has been reading so many chapter books about fairies, and she plays pretending being fairies with her friends. I recommended her to wear "Mary Poppins" costume but I learned that it wasn't a fairy tale but fantasy, I also recommended her to be a Red riding hood(I thought that would be cute on her) , but she was like "no! I will be a fairy, no other characters!". :)

She sounded they had so much fun at the party, there were princesses, mermaids, a Robin Hood, and some other cool characters in her class.
Next event is for Father's Day, she is hoping that her daddy could attend to it. I hope so too!

Edmonton weekend

It was a fantastic weekend. We went to Edmonton.
Col had meetings in downtown from 8:30 to 3:30 on both Sat and Sun, so he was working both days, Juliett and I got 2 days in the big city! What a treat, thanks Col!

We stayed at Matrix Hotel which was excellent! We liked the hotel a lot.
It was so close to Col's working place and that was really good too.

On the way to Edmonton, we saw a wolf.

Nice stylish hotel! Great choice!(I chose!) Clean and nice atmosphere. Juliett was sooooooo excited!
They had a KEURIG machine in the room and I enjoyed coffee and tea (free).

When I chose the hotel on the Internet, I read reviews, many people said that the breakfast(included) was really good, so we were looking forward to it.
Croissants, bagels, muffins(not greasy ones), some hard bread, apple strudels, warm cinnamon rolls, granola & yogurt, fruits kebabs, two kinds of frittata (sausage and spinach), and fancy kinds of coffee. That was REALLY good!

On Saturday morning, Juliett and I walked to downtown farmers market that my sister-in-law recommended. Big thanks to her, I loved the market! The market was held on the 104 street that had some old buildings, that reminded me the time I went to markets in London, I love markets in London and I went many markets many times there. I was really happy to see the lovely atmosphere in Edmonton.
Juliett and I were very happy walking at the market, we saw lots of great vendors, such as honey, crafts, cupcakes, candies, chocolates, asparagus, farm vegetables, accessories,  knitting, and more and more! It was VERY, VERY nice! It was totally different from the farmers market I have seen before in other places. ( I like one in Calgary too but I liked the street atmosphere mostly.)

If we live close, I would go to the market holding my basket and shop some fresh vegetables and flowers..... that is my ideal life. :)

Juliett liked to see the juggler and the fun atmosphere too.

She had chocolate bread from Dauphine and she liked it a lot, she asked me to buy more and we decided to go to the bistro/bakery in front of their vendor for lunch.

It was really lovely, it also reminded me cafes in London.
They had beautiful bread and baked desserts there.

Juliett had more bread and a cream puff(treat!) and I had soup of the day that was fennel bulb and asparagus, it was good, I liked the sourbread came with the soup, I very much enjoyed the fancy atmosphere. I wished my stomach was much bigger so I could try lots desserts there.

We took a bus to Royal Alberta Museum in the afternoon.

We liked the museum, it was a beautiful day and it wasn't busy at the museum which was good, Juliett and I were able to see all exhibits.

We joined the talk about rattle snakes there, it was for families and good for us to understand, they did many quiz about rattle snakes, Juliett listened very carefully because she thought we could give the same questions to Col (we did, and he knew everything. That impressed us!).
At the very end, Juliett raised her hand and said to the museum person that we had seen a rattle snake at Writing-on-stone. People there thought that was very cool. :)

We also saw other museum person showing some animal furs. We touched a beaver fur (and its tail), and a coyote fur and a wolf fur. Juliett told him that we saw a wolf on the way from home and he said that was cool too!

Rattle snakes and wolves. We have seen both, maybe we are quite lucky!

Juliett loved the stone and rock place. She was saying "wow!" and "oh!" all the time there.

She had fun looking for camouflaged bugs. She liked the butterfly collection and excited about seeing tarantulas and scorpions.

We had a great time there. It was a really beautiful day, we saw 3 or 4 weddings taking pictures outside of the museum.

Col picked us up after his work and we got together with L&K and had dinner at a burger restaurant. I am glad that we have more chances to see them more often than when we lived down South. Col always looks so happy to see his brother. We stopped by their house and had more chatting at their nice yard. Juliett played with Abby. Thank you, L&K!

                     ☆☆☆

We again had the nice breakfast(they served different egg dishes) yesterday morning and left the hotel. It was raining, Juliett and I took a bus to WEM and spent a fun time there as always.

Juliett wanted to get one of the colourful aprons at Anthropologie!
In my 20's, I travelled quite a lot by myself, I went to England every summer for 8 years. When I lived in England, I went to N.Y., I often went down to London for weekends or holidays and explored lots of fun places. It was so much fun to walk in the cities with maps, I knew that there were some unsafe areas in those big cities but I was just careful.
But since I became a mom, I became much more cautious and tended not to be adventurous with my family. I have seen some scary/unsafe news in Edmonton or Calgary and I preferred to visit malls where are very convenience and I can see many things at once with Juliett.
I thought it was really good to see some parts of downtown of Edmonton this time, I didn't know that there were beautiful old brick buildings there, I didn't know about the fantastic farmers market or the lovely cafe/bakery. I believe that Juliett enjoyed the day in downtown too. It will be great if we can explore more the area in the future.

We left the city at 6:00, and got home around 11:00.
We saw two coyotes and many deer on the way home.
Thanks to Col who worked for 2 days there and also drove all the way home, he must have been very tired. He said that he had a great time working with interesting people there and that was good. Juliett bought some books(used and new), actually she quite enjoyed shopping with her saved up allowance. I didn't do shopping much this time but I was really happy with the experiences in the city!
