We have watched northern lights for some times when we lived in the north 2 years ago. Not only northern lights but we also saw uncountable stars and many many shooting stars.
But since we moved to this townhouse, we haven't seen any shooting stars or Northern lights.
I still receive aurora alerts from Aurora Watch(by University of Alberta). I was a bit disappointed about that we didn't see any when I received many red alerts a few weeks ago. Reasons why we weren't able to see them were that the weather condition wasn't good, or the time was too late and I didn't notice the alerts, or we were just too lazy.
Last night, I received a yellow alert around 8:00. The sky was very clear.
We decided that if we received a red alert, we would drive out of town and see the sky.
Around 10:00, we couldn't wait until we receive a red alert, the percentage became very high(90%), we grabbed mitts, jackets, hats, and blankets and left home.
Once we left our town, I was surprised by how dark the sky was and also the numbers of stars. Julie and I were able to see northern lights even from our car windows.
We parked our car at a parking lot by a lake. As soon as our car stopped, we jumped out from it and looked up the sky. The northern lights were gorgeous. They weren't colourful ones like red or yellow. But whitish greenish lights dancing in the dark sky with full of stars were gorgeous enough to me.
After we gazed at the sky for a while, we decided to head home because the aurora seemed fading away, but when we were driving on highway, I noticed that they were coming back, bright again.
We drove to our close park and looked up at the sky again.
.......Beautiful.
Col has seen much stronger ones before in the north, but they were definitely the best of all I have seen before.

April 9th
It's April 9th. I noticed it this morning.
Col woke up and came down stairs, I told him it was April 9th today, he said,
"April 9th,....aha! Unlucky number day! Eriko, Happy Anniversary!" :)
I think I have wrote about our 3 wedding anniversary days(official marriage in Japan, ceremony and party in Canada, wedding party in Japan). April 9th is the day we had our wedding party in Japan 10 years ago.
We wanted to have our wedding party in April which is a beautiful month with cherry blossom blooming. When we went to the hotel to book our wedding party date about 8 months before, they told us that April weekends were already almost full but April 9th. In Japan, number 4 and 9 are a kind of disliked numbers because the sounds have bad meanings. That's why usually people don't want to have their special day with those numbers.
But we didn't care so much, especially for Col, 4 and 9 weren't bad at all, so we had our party on the day. :) It was a beautiful day, Col's parents, our friends and family all enjoyed seeing cherry blossoms around the hotel.

I can't believe that it has been 10 years since the day. I can still recall the moments very clearly. I remember about how hard to choose my perfect dress from hundreds of dresses, the evenings Col and I spent making our invitations, my veil, our ring pillow, welcome board, and my second bouquet, the fun days Col's parents visited from Canada, the moment our friends and family threw flower petals to us, the surprise I wore the pink dress my mom wore for her wedding(which was hand sewn by my aunt), my mom very happily talking and thanking to my friends, my dad's speech with lots of tears, the video messages from Canada and England, another surprise that my students showed up to the party room..... every moments are still so vivid to me....but 10 YEARS ago! Wow!
I will take our album out from the shelf and look at photos tonight with Col and Julie.

beavertails and cream puff swans
Julie said, "mommy, could you make the swan desserts because we saw swans!"
Then we thought we should make something beaver-ish too for our first beaver watching.
Beavers... I looked up Internet and found that they had sweets called "beavertails", which are a kind of fried flat bread with sweets on top(Nutella and banana slices, cinnamon sugar, whipped cream and chocolate, etc.).
I don't like frying food in oil at home, so I looked for recipes of non-fry beavertails-ish sweets.
I baked whole wheat bread with sugar and cinnamon on top.
Maybe I should have made with half whole wheat and half flour, 100% whole wheat bread wasn't that popular in my family. :(
Anyways, this is our first beaver spotting celebration. :)
I also baked cream puffs and made the swan heads with leftover mixture.
We all liked these swans very much, yum!

shopping in the city
I bought this crystal at a gem store in Calgary.
I saw this basket at Value Village, I think it is a Bolgatanga basket. Col asked me how many African baskets I needed(I had 3 at home), but I didn't leave it on the store shelf, I knew I would keep it with good care and I also didn't have this colour in my collection, so I bought it. :)
I bought some more bunny dishes.
At almost empty Target, I found this bunny candy bowl.
We all went to a German store & cafe and we had nice lunch there. I had sauerkraut and sausage with pierogi(for Julie). It reminded me my trip to Germany, I remember that my friend and I were very surprised by the size of sausage and the mount of sauerkraut there.
The store had lots of interesting German or European products there. I bought a pretty ornament, some chocolate, and fig jam. Julie was very happy with the Easter bunny chocolate that her Nana got for her. She has been eating little by little each day.
I wanted to make our kitchen red and cream, a kind of country style before, but I changed my mind and I am gradually making my kitchen to light blue(turquoise), cream and black.
I bought some blue kitchen items in Calgary. When I was washing them at home, I told Col that I felt a bit bad to tell his mom that I was changing my kitchen colour because she gave me red electric mixer, tea towels and spatula as gifts in the past, of course I will keep using them though.
Then, Col brought this basting brush from his bag and said that his mom suggested him to get this when they saw it at the German store. What a surprise, I love it! Thanks Col, and thanks to Mom!
I bought this pizza stone. We love eating homemade pizza in Spring and Summer time. I like thin crusts much better than thick ones, but it is hard to do it with our home oven. It was only $15, so I wanted to give it a try.
Shopping in Calgary is always fun.
We have to save up money for the next visit, maybe Summer time.

our Spring holiday in Calgary
We came back from Calgary last night.
Col thought that we wouldn't go to Calgary for this Spring break, but thanks to Col's parents who suggested him to come down and have some relax days, he changed his mind and we were able to visit them(Julie and I wanted to go there)! He was happy on the way home yesterday that he had a great days in Calgary.
We had fun days there, one of the exciting events was.... that we saw BEAVERS!
Julie's Papa told us that he saw 3 beavers just a few days ago at the reservoir at dawn. Julie, Papa, and I went there to see if we could spot some beavers too.
Papa took his binoculars and stand telescope with him. Luckily the weather was great, no wind, so that we could see the surface of water very well.
Papa spotted a beaver swimming across the river, he pointed the 'V' shape wave on the water, Julie and I saw that too. Then he set his telescope and focused on to the beaver, it was so exciting to see it, we saw it gnawing a branch or something by the river bank, we saw its rubbery tail too. Then Papa spotted more beavers, Julie and I took turns to watch them through his telescope. It was a GREAT experience!
I can tick off "beavers" from my "I want to see these wild animals" list. There is only one animal left in my list, which is Caribou. Maybe I will make a list again, this time it will be more detailed, such as "great gray owl" instead of just 'owl' . :)
We also saw swans. It was so lovely to see many birds in Calgary.
When we were watching swans and birds, we also saw deer on the grass just below us.
I think it is wonderful to have so many wildlife in big parks in Calgary, it is such a big city but they also have great nature in the city.
Papa, Col, and Julie went golfing(she was watching them play and picking up broken tees), they went to see a great horned owl's nest and saw its horns sticking out from its nest. :)
Papa and Nana told us that they saw a Northern pygmy owl in a park and drove us there but we didn't see it the day. I have held it once at Birds of prey centre but I would love to see it in nature someday!
While boys and Julie were golfing, Mom-in-law and I went shopping, she also drove to Japanese consulate so that I was able to receive new Japanese textbooks for Julie. We had lunch at Manuel Latruwe, it was lovely. I bought some macarons and we enjoyed tasting them.
Julie and I loved the Earl Grey flavour one, I bought lemon, raspberry with chocolate cream, salty caramel, and yuzu with chocolate cream. I thought yuzu tasted quite yuzu-like. There were more interesting flavours such as anise, or olive oil. I would like to try them next time.
Big big thanks to Col's parents, we had a wonderful time in Calgary with them. We ate very good foods there with them too. Julie loves salmon, they cooked a gorgeous wild salmon for her, she had salmon sushi too. What a lucky granddaughter she is!
Col and I were very happy to eat Col's favourite comfort food(Mom's stews) too.
☆☆☆
My friend's birthday was on the 3rd, we went their house in the evening to surprise them. Julie knocked their door in her Brownie's uniform holding 2 cookie boxes. :)
When Col and I heard their surprising screams, we smiled. It was a success.
They were in the middle of having their supper, but they welcomed us and we had such a fun time playing and chatting for 2 hours! That was very nice!
We went to Canyon Meadows theatre to see movies. Julie and I really wanted to watch Paddington but we weren't around cities in February(when the movie was on), so we sadly gave up. We were very lucky to find out that they were showing it at the theatre for just $5! We enjoyed watching it. It was very fun to see where we went last summer in the movie, such as Natural History Museum, and Portobello road market.
I went to the movie theatre once when I visited Calgary for the first time with Col 12 years ago. I picked "Legally Blonde 2" and we watched it together.
I was so shocked by seeing audience's reactions to the movie, because we watch movies very quietly at theatres in Japan. It was a big culture shock to me to see people laughing loud, saying "awwww", "oh", "wow" loud, and eating a huge bucket of popcorn constantly.
I thought I would understand the movie but it was very hard for me to understand their fast talking and humour. I couldn't laugh when everyone but me laughing so much, gradually I became angry, stressed out, sad, and miserable with my poor understanding. At the end of the movie, people were smiling but I was crying so badly(poor Col). Since then, I have never gone to the theatre, a kind of traumatised. :)
I was joking with Col that maybe it was time to go there again to get over the bad experience. Well, to get over it, I shouldn't have chosen a children movie, but I really enjoyed watching "Paddington" there. Good bye, my bad memory!
We did lots of fun things in Calgary that we can't do in mountains.
Thank you so much again to Col's parents.

Thank you so much again to Col's parents.

colourful!
The first day of Spring break.
Col was out of town, Julie and I spent a fun and relax day today.
This morning, I noticed that the flowers(hyacinths and daffodils) smelled so lovely. I have been having a cold and I wasn't able to smell things well. I was so glad when I noticed the Spring smell today.
The colourful flowers made me feel happy, I took my colourful table cloth out for our table.
Talking about "colourful", Julie brought home her really nice art work she did at school. Very nice!
We are thinking to get a frame for it. :)
I baked custard pudding for snack today, they are rich and creamy, so good with bitter caramel sauce at the bottom.
For this two weeks, I have been knitting this cowl.
Patter from The Purl Bee website "Gradient Cowl".
I changed the size a bit(1 inch narrower, 8 inches shorter), also I chose the colours and used the yarn which I had at home.
I wanted to make something summery, so I added the strip pattern. I love stripes!
When I saw the cowl on the website, I liked the colours very much, a very bright and happy cowl. The pattern was very very simple but I wanted to try making it because I wanted to see how colours showed. I made it shorter but still 50 inches (11 inches width), it took much longer time than I thought to make it!
I don't know what inspired me to choose those colours but they remind me something....I can't recall what exactly is. (Not IKEA, just in case)
Those are one of my favourite colours anyway!
I like mustard yellow in winter time, but when spring comes I like dandelion yellow more, I enjoyed knitting the bright yellow part a lot.
I am looking forward to wearing it.

this week
A few days ago, we had snow again, we also had fog and that made trees so white and beautiful. I loved seeing them from our window.
On Monday, I baked a marble chiffon cake with green tea.
On Tuesday, I baked foccacia. Julie helped spreading thyme and sea salt on the dough. She doesn't like olives, so I put some olives on one side and kept the other side without olives.
Col and Julie were very happy to have sandwiches with the foccacio next day. They told me that was really, really good.
On Wednesday, I was in bed all day, but thanks to many Advils, I was able to get up and walk around at night. When I was washing dishes in the kitchen, Julie came to me and told me that they were having a movie party the next day and children were allowed to bring their own snacks. She asked me if we had any chips or popcorn....we didn't have any.
I remembered that we had some popcorn kernels(we didn't have microwavable ones either), so I decided to make popcorn for her. It was night time, but she helped me. She was fascinated by watching corns popping in the pan. It was actually fun.

We made 2 batches, one with salt and butter, for the other, I made caramel sauce and drizzled it over popcorn. Both of them were yum.
Julie was very happy with homemade popcorn, she took a bag full to school.
Since she bought the crystal necklace in Jasper, she has been wearing it for everyday, even to school too. I have been quite strict about what she can wear/take to school because I think that schools are the place to learn, so, my rules are no manicure, no rings or bracelets or necklaces, and no piercing.
But, I also understand that sometimes she feels a kind of 'left out' because of her mom's rules. So, I told her that if she could be responsible with it, she could wear the necklace she bought with her saved allowance.
One day, I told her my story that I wasn't allowed to watch some silly comedy shows or dramas which "all" classmates were watching at home when I was in elementary school. I felt left out and wished to watch as other kids did. Then I asked Julie if she felt that kind of feeling(because she barely watch TV shows at home, just Pokemon and some cartoons sometimes), and she told me that "all" classmates talked about "America's Funniest Home Videos" but she didn't and she didn't know what they were talking about and felt left out, or she didn't know so many pop music and she feels left out. Understandable.
A few days later, I saw "AFV" was on TV, so I asked Julie to join and we watched it. She looked very satisfied and happy and thanked me that she could talk about it the next day with classmates.
But surprisingly, she hasn't asked me to watch the show again since.
She wanted to watch it for a long time, then she watched it, that experience made her very satisfied and maybe she felt she was one of "all". And maybe she realized that being in "all" wasn't such a big deal.
To grow up, she will have that kind of things for many times. I don't know how to raise a teenager... Luckily, we have a good educator at home(Col) but as a mother I should learn and be a better mom too.
Julie came home with this cool "customized' water bottle. She was very pleased with 3 items she cut out from magazine or so. One was a picture of cherry blossoms, the middle one was a wolf, and the last one was a picture of avocado! That made me smile. I knew she liked eating avocados, but I didn't know she liked THAT much.
Well, that was our week, Col has been unbelievable busy.....club activities, parents interviews, a field trip, a fundraising volunteer, and he and his team will go to another tournament tomorrow.
I felt very guilty being sick, I wasn't able to cook proper dinner for him. I feel better today, I just hope that he didn't get this cold and we will have a nice Spring break.
Julie is at her friend's birthday party at the moment.
She must be having fun!
