my first cardigan

Finally our rainy season has gone, we are having sunny days.
I am relieved to know that Bow river is now settled, but to see the damaged scenes of downtown in Calgary and other towns is really shocking, I don't know what to say. I watched the news that they told 2013 Stampede was going to be held, I was impressed by so many volunteers who gathered for the city. If we live close to Calgary I would like to do volunteer too, but we can't, we are thinking to go and support Stampede this summer.
I hope the water won't cause troubles anymore in other towns such as Medicine Hat.

Through this rainy June, I have been knitting a big project.
When I saw the cover of the knitting magazine in Japan, I fell in love with the cable knit(Alan knit) cardigan and wished that someday I would be able to knit it.

I learned how to knit last year, since then, I have knitted some hats, mittens, and bags. I thought I had learned a lot through those projects, but to make this cardigan was a totally different experience.
It was great to knit the cardigan, I learned A LOT.

When I finished knitting all the parts, I thought that I had done more than 90% of the cardigan.
But it was very wrong.

Putting the parts together and finishing were the hardest thing for me, I found some skills I didn't know how to and I looked up Internet and my books, spent a long time to figure out how to do those.

I thought like, "OK, I gave up, I will sew parts together by my sewing machine", many times.

Maybe I should have started from a sweater for beginners, but I really wanted to make this one, the explanation on the method was very simple, didn't have details or instruction that people who are good at knitting have already known, I was so thankful to Internet that helped me to learn how to, without it I couldn't make it.

This is that photo when I was done knitting the cardigan, I started making a hood but I had to do "short-row knitting" that I don't like. I have done it when I made a bag before, but it took a long time to figure out how to do it again.

Finally the hood was done, then buttons. I wanted to use nice shell buttons but I don't have right size ones at the moment, I wanted to see how the cardigan looks with buttons, so I used the wooden buttons for temporary.

Looks like I tend to knit longer and skinnier, fortunately I can wear it but I thought I should have made my hood wider(I might try knitting again before winter). If I use the exact yarn the book says, I might have made it just right, I don't know, but it is a kind of impossible and expensive for me who uses Japanese knitting books. For this cardigan I used Fishermen's Wool by Lion Brand from Michael's, before I started knitting I checked gauge, it was quite close to the book's.

Actually this cardigan should have two pockets if you are following the method, but I don't like pockets on cardigans so I didn't make them. But it would be nice to know how to make pockets so I will try for something for maybe Juliett in the future.

I found that the small needles for cable knitting were very useful. I wanted to write down numbers and things, so I photocopied the book and used the two sheets( so that I don't need to carry the big and heavy book with me).

My grandma was a good knitter. When I was knitting this cardigan, I was thinking about her.
I would like knitting to be one of my long term hobbies. There are tons to learn and so many projects I would like to try!

family hiking

Col got a day off yesterday, we decided to go hiking to Eaton Falls.

Many people recommended this trail. It is about 4.5miles, 3 hours hike.

As soon as we got to the parking and opened the car door, I smelled roses.
Alberta wild roses have started blooming!

As always, I took many photos of wild flowers and mushrooms.
We saw many mushrooms and butterflies.

I really liked this flower, I looked up my books and also internet but couldn't find the name. It was like anemone, or hellebore.

We had to pass two streams to the fall. Juliett was brave, she walked on twigs and stones with good balancing, her shoes got wet but didn't care!

Wild Columbine/Canada Columbine 、
This was very pretty. I found it was "wild columbine", I finished reading "the secret garden" to Juliett last week, and we remembered columbines in their secret garden.

We saw many of this white flower. It is tricky to match my photos to my book photos. I had many flowers I couldn't find names.

Here are mushrooms we saw on the trail.

She didn't complain at all! I guess it wasn't hard for her to walk up and down 7km trail. I was glad to see her enjoying the outdoor adventure.

We know this one, Indian Paintbrush.

I took more and more photos of flowers, but some were not good...maybe I need a better camera? ;)
A beautiful view! This trail is the opposite side of Sulphur Gates we went in winter. To compare the photos, winter ones are very cold, rough, strong and sad to me.

When we see this deer antlers sign, we turn and go into a narrow trail to the fall.

We made it! 2 hours walk to the Eaton fall.
When we were walking on the trail, it was quite hot, but when we were closer to the fall, the temperature went down and it was so nice and cool there. We had some snack and enjoyed the view. When the water is low, you could across the water and go to the other side but there were lots of water and we didn't do it.

We had a good time there, then started walking to the parking again. I thought I need more exercise, it was tiring to walk up and down the trail that had many stones on.

Striped Coralroot

Canada Violet
I have never seen a white violet before.

This trail is popular for horseback riding too.
We took our bear spray with us just in case, but we only saw a fox on the way back home.

I have no idea what these are, but I thought they were interesting, we also saw a spider in one of them. We saw some beetles and many butterflies. Juliett said "wow! this beetle is so big!" when she saw maybe 3cm beetle, I told her that we can easily see Japanese rhinoceros beetles which has 5cm without their horns, she was very surprised.

It was a good hike. We are looking forward to doing it more and more in Summer.

4 more days to Summer holiday for Juliett, a week more to go for Col !

a congratulations cake for Daddy

Actually we could say that it was the first sunny day today in June, we had so many rainy days as if we were having a rainy season. We watched news about flooding in Calgary and Southern Alberta. We feel very sorry about the terrible damages there, I was sad to know that the beautiful historical houses by the river got damaged, I hope it will stop raining and the river will go back to normal very soon.

It was Juliett's class's field trip today, the weather forecast said it would be rainy all day but luckily we didn't have rain. At the beautiful national park, children and we(parents volunteers) had a lovely time. 3 hours(1.5 hours each) bus ride made us so tired, Juliett and I got home and had the special treat, marble chiffon cake!

Actually I baked this cake for another special reason, for our celebration!

Col got next year job at the high school he works! Congratulations, Col!
That means, we don't need to pack our things for moving this summer. Yay!
I don't know if I could say this town is where we would love to live in for a long time, being in mountains is wonderful but inconvenient. But I really appreciate that Juliett doesn't need to say good-bye to her friends and school. Because she is our own child, I want her to have good friends who she can build up good relationships in long term.
Also, we heard that government made education budget smaller and that caused many teachers lose their jobs, in the sad situations Col is able to keep teaching at his school, which is so lucky.

Thank you very much for supporting and thinking of us, I will write a lot more about our first Summer in mountains.

angry birds...

They are having 'amazing race' at her class with an older class this week. Older children and grade 1 help each other and solve problems, quiz, and do some adventure, I guess. They did it once in winter time and kids loved it. Juliett was very excited when she knew they were having once again this week.

Last time, they made teams, and each teams had their team colours. Juliett's team was green and she went to school wearing something green whole week.

Last Friday she came home from school and told us that her team was "angry birds" team.

I have seen "angry birds" characters before, but we don't play the game and I don't think the characters were my taste, I also don't like the font of the title, Juliett or Col weren't interested in it either, so that we didn't have anything "angry birds" things at home.

Yesterday, she came back from school and asked me to help making something "angry birds"-ish.
She coloured a picture I printed out from computer and put a band around her head and made a hat.

I cut out some parts and glued together, and sewed to hair bands.
It was easy enough, 10 minutes craft.

Of course Juliett liked them so much.
Anyway, I am glad that her sickness has totally gone and she will enjoy all the fun events at school.

high fever / Happy Father's Day!

Because she suddenly lost two teeth? or some bacteria got in? Juliett got high fever on Saturday.
She had about 40℃ all day, she took some junior advil three times but the high fever didn't go down.

She looked so sick, she cried a lot, she didn't want to do anything, even not watching her favourite DVDs. It was a big work to drink some water for her, she really looked so sick and Col and I were talking that we should take her to emergency on Sunday morning if she still had the high fever.

She woke up smiling on Sunday morning, "Happy Father's Day, Daddy!" she said and went down stairs to play Lego. She was totally normal, no high fever at all.

We don't know why she got the high fever but anyway we were happy to see her feeling much better.
Col was working both Saturday and Sunday again, so Juliett and I tidied up rooms and prepared one of his favourite meals.

They had a Father's Day Ice cream Party at her class on Friday, at that time Col was having his prep time and he was able to visit her class. It was so nice for Juliett to have her daddy's visit. Col had a good time there too.
I saw Juliett's message to Col, she wrote some reasons why her daddy is so cool.
It said, " My dad is a superhero because he is a teacher, he gives me money, he works so hard, of course he loves me, and he loves my family." and also it said, "In Japan he can hit his head on the roof!" (she meant that he could touch his head to the ceilings).  :)

Col was very happy with the dinner, meatball tomato soup. I put many mushrooms and zucchini, and at the very end I added some basil and Parmesan cheese on top, we love it so much.
He had custard pudding for his dessert.

Well, Juliett only had some rice and boiled vegetable just because she didn't have any food the day before.

8 more days to summer holiday! She said " I can't be sick anymore! I can't miss any fun events at school!" I am glad that she is very fine today.

She put her best buddy Cutie on the bench every morning when she leaves for school.
I thought it looked as if it was really waiting for Juliett coming back.Cute, but a bit lonely. I put another Juliett's toy next to it. :)

Here is another tooth, Juliett's tooth fairy!

Juliett got her first tooth out 2 days ago, and she got her second tooth come out this evening. :)

She is busy writing a letter to her tooth fairy.
She told me that she would set a glass of water again, she is going to save all pink water and someday she will make magic out of the special water! ;)

Welcome, her tooth fairy!

Finally! Juliett lost one tooth!

Juliett's classmates have already lost many teeth, she had been looking forward to this experience. When it came out, she was so surprised and also soooo happy!

She told me on the way home from school that she almost lost her tooth when she ate some pieces of apple for her snack at school, her friends told her to pull it out but she was too scared that she couldn't do it. Col got home and after supper he took a look at it and decided to pull it out. He tied floss to her tooth and tied the other end of the floss to a door knob(typical way, he and also I did when we were little). He asked her to push the door close, she was scared and she followed the door for the first time(that was so cute), then she pushed so weak for the second time, we were almost saying "that's too weak, you have to push strong!", she said " it came out!" and she was holding her tooth. :)

The next tooth is wiggling too. She will lose it soon.

Well, in Japan, when we lose baby teeth, we hope that we will get nice and healthy teeth and throw them. We throw upper teeth to the ground(under the floor) and lower teeth to the sky(to the house roof). But here we have Tooth Fairy custom in Canada.

Juliett was very busy writing a letter to her tooth fairy last night, something like she would give her tooth and she would like the fairy to give her a picture of herself(fairy). She promised to the fairy that she wouldn't tell anyone about it but her best friend who believes fairies so strongly. She loves fairies and she is so curious how her fairy looks like. She also wrote that she would protect her fairy from any bad wizards.

Her friend told her that she should put a glass of water by her tooth, because then when the fairy takes her tooth, her dress touch the water and water will get the dress's colour. Next morning she will be able to tell what colour her tooth fairy is to see the water colour....  Of course Juliett prepared a glass of water by her tooth. :)

This morning, at 6:00! I woke up with Juliett shouting something in her bed room.
"Mommy, Mommy! A tooth fairy came! She left a letter to me and come and look at this water! It's PINK!!! COME, COME TO MY ROOM, MOMMY!!!!!!!"

What an excitement! I was sleepy and didn't go then she came to our bed and jumped around...
I gave up and went to her room.

Her Papa gave Juliett a nice wooden tooth case a long time ago, we looked for it last night but couldn't find it around, so she put her tooth in a necklace case. By the case, there were a tiny letter sealed with wax and a 2 dollar coin, and the water had changed to pink.

I looked at the letter, it was written with beautiful hand writing and the writing was so tiny, I couldn't read it well, Juliett waited her Daddy woke up and then he read it to her.
It was something like, the fairy was so happy to see Juliett's beautiful first tooth, she was afraid that she couldn't show how she look by fairly rules, say hello to her best friend, keep teeth clean and she was looking forward to coming back to her again soon. Juliett was very happy.

She liked and she was curious about the pink water so much.
"Mommy, do you think I can drink it up?"
" If I drink it, would I be a fairy?"
"Maybe I will put my finger in it and see how it happens."
"Wow! It is pink water, but on my finger it is clear! It's a magic! It's a magical water!'
"Hmmm... it doesn't taste anything. My finger is OK too. nothing has changed."
"I want to keep it forever, Mommy, do you have a bottle?'
"Thank you, see? I am like a scientist! Daddy! Daddy! Look at me! I am a scientist!"
.... what a morning. :)

I looked at my old blog posts when Juliett just got 4 teeth, at that time the teeth looked quite big to her mouth but when she got her tooth out yesterday, it was so small in her hand.
She hasn't had any cavities, I hope she keeps her teeth healthy and nice for a long time.

As she is growing, I am getting old too, I found 5 white(gray) hair yesterday too!
