けん玉。
私、とったよ～！っていう表情がかわいいです。

ここ数日、どんより雲っていて、時々、傘をささなくていい程度の雨。雷もごろごろ山のほうでなっていたりする天気が続いています。
小学校もこれからイベント続きだけれど、高校だって今日は野球大会とのこと。主人も運動する格好で出かけました。張り切りすぎて怪我してきませんように。。。
It has been cloudy and we sometimes have light rain and thunder. I hope the weather is nice for the weekend. Col's school is having a baseball day today!

ジュリは雨の日はレゴとパズルに熱中。
最近は主人が子供の頃のに作ったお城のマニュアルをネットで見てまた同じものを主人と一緒に作っています。３０年くらい前のレゴも現役。ところどころピースがなくなっちゃっているみたいだけれど、お城もなかなか出来てきました。（肝心なお城が写真に写っていませんが。）
ずっとかわらなく楽しめるおもちゃっていいですね、将来はジュリの子供が主人のお城や海賊セット、そしてじぃじに買ってもらったジュリのポリスステーションセットをごちゃごちゃに混ぜて遊んだりするのかな。
Juliett has been spending her time playing Lego and puzzles after school on rainy days.
Col found a manual to build his old Lego castle on the Internet and he and Juliett have been building it again. Lego is nice, his old Lego blocks are about 30 years old but still in good condition. In the future, Juliett's child(ren) might play with his Lego and Juliett's police station Lego set!

そんな天気の中、少しずつ編み物を進めています。前に我慢強くないから大きな作品を時間をかけて作ることが苦手と書いたけれど、やってみよう！と思って。別の編みこみようの針を２本使うパターンなので、時間がかかって１日数段ずつしかできないけれど、夏の終わり？冬の前までにはできるでしょう、と私には似合わない「少しずつコツコツ」スタイルで。
I am knitting something big, I only knit some rows each day and hope it will be done by fall.
I like the honeycomb pattern.

how to spend our own time...

話が前後してしまって忘れ去られていた記事があったので載せます。
２週間前の金曜日、ジュリはクラスのお友達のお家でプレイデート、ちょうど３連休の始まりと言うこともあって、主人もお昼で仕事が終って帰ってきました。
１時のお約束。午前中におやつにと焼いたリンゴのマフィンを手土産に持たせ、初めてだし２時間後くらいに迎えに行くのかなと思って送って行ったら、「天気もいいし、連休の始まりだし、好きなだけ。迎えは５時頃はどうかしら。」って。「いいの？そんなに長く？」「いいの、いいの。自由な時間を楽しんでね～！」って友達のママが言ってくれて。４時間ジュリなし！（いつも一緒の小さな３人家族にはとても珍しいことです。）
I was writing this post, but since we visited Jasper, I have forgotten about it.
The day before we went to Jasper, it was Friday and Juliett had a playdate with her classmate, Col finished his work early(noon) the day, so we dropped her off at her friend's house at 1:00, and picking her up time was 5:00, Col and I had 4 hours without Juliett! (That was quite unusual to us.) 

すごく天気が良くて、早速家に戻って水筒を持って、スニーカーに履き替えて、主人と町の近くの滝にハイキングに出かけました。
We decided to go for a hike, we drove back home and grabbed our water bottles and shoes for hiking.
We headed to Muskeg Falls.

注意。あなたはグリズリーベアの住むエリアにいますよ。

トレイルがあると言うサインもない林の入り口、本当にこんなところから入っていくの？と私はかなり疑い気味だったけれど、このサインだけはありました。
We parked our car by the highway, and there were no signs for the fall and didn't even look like it was a trail to the fall but we saw this sign.(above)

赤リスはやっぱりかわいい。

林は古い木が茂っていて、暗く、私は熊がでてきやしないかビクビク。主人が大きな声で話をしていれば熊は去って行くよと言うので、ずっとしゃべり続けて進みました。
I was a bit scared because nobody was walking there, it was quite dark and there were many sad looking old trees around. I worried about encountering bears, Col told me that what I should do was just keep talking as usual, so I did. 

日の当たる所で花を見つけました。
林の中をずっと歩いたけれど、花を見つけたのはここだけ。主張していなくて、静かにたたずんでいて、かわいいお花。
They were the only flowers I saw on the trail. They were really pretty.  I knew the were some kind of orchid but didn't know what, so I looked my book later at home.

ずっと前にキャンモアのあたりを散策した時に野生のラン科の花をいくつか見ていたので、何となくその種類に近いなと思って家に戻って本を見て、似たような花を見つけました。「妖精のスリッパ」と言う愛称がある Calypso という花ではないか、と思っています。
I am thinking they were Calypso that are called "Fairy Slippers", I hope it is right.

ここは一応この町の近くの見所のひとつになっているようだけれど、何にも手入れや舗装もされていない山道を歩いて、いきなり開けた眺めがこちら。崖の上でした。
We kept walking and talking, then suddenly we heard water sound and we were a kind of top of a cliff. 

もうちょっと近づいて崖の上から真下の写真を撮りたかったけれど、「地盤がゆるかったり、何が起こるかわからないから、近くには絶対に行くな。」と主人に止められ、ここまで。
確かにここは危ない。ジュリを連れてきていない時のハイキングで良かったです。眺めは写真では全く伝わらないと思ってしまうくらい迫力ありありでした。
I was going to go a little bit closer but Col stopped me and I agreed, there were no fences or holding bars or anything, I was glad that we came without Juliett. Maybe it is hard to see from this photo, but it was quite scary and dangerous.

そこから崖を左手に林の中を下り続けると、今度はさっきのぞいた川に着きます。写真だとわかり辛いかもしれないけれど、この写真は私たちが大きな石の上に立っていて、その下に滝があります。水の勢いがゴーゴーとすごかったです。
Then we walked down to the bottom of the river, actually this is the photo we stood on a big rock that had a water fall below.
そんな石の上に座って、水の音を聞いて、主人とたわいもないことを話して、口に泥と藁みたいなものを加えてせっせと巣作りに励む鳥の様子を眺めて、 いきなりもらった夫婦だけの時間をのんびり過ごしました。
We sat on the rocks and listened to the water sound, chatted, observed a bird that was busy making it's nest, we had a good time there.

この時も、そして先週末のお誕生日会の２時間も、ジュリがどこかに出かけて主人と私が２人になって、「これからこういう時間が多くなる。。。んだよね。」「何か共通の趣味とか持たないと、お互いにそれぞれのコンピューターに無言で向かい合って過ごすことに。。。それがずっとだったらなんだか危険だよね。」
Col and I had that 4 hours on our own and last week we had 2 hours while Juliett was at her friends' birthday party, we realized that we would have our own time more and more with Juliett's growth.
"We should have a common hobby or activity or something, if not, we would spend our time separately with each own computers... that's not good."  .....common hobbies....do we have any?

ジュリが生まれてからこの６年間、３人、もしくはジュリと私たちのどちらかが過ごしてきた時間が主だったから、ちょっと不思議な感じでした。結局、急に共通の趣味、というのも無理だけれど、眺めのいいデッキで「コーヒーを飲むこと」を共通に、主人は読書、私は編み物、それだったらお互いハッピーかもね、という結論に。
Since Juliett was born, we have spent so much time as a small unit together, so it is a bit strange to do something without Juliett, but she will have her own time more and more in the future.

この町にいる間、特に気候のいいこれからの季節は、まだまだこういう小さな見所がたくさんあるようなので、こうやって町の周りの散策を一緒にもう少ししてみたいと思います。
Well, so far, Col and I are happy to have a cup of coffee together (sometimes maybe at the deck), and he reads books and I knit. This summer I would like to explore more around this town and go for more hiking with him (and of course with Juliett if she wasn't busy).

Swiss chard / "Cod, potato and spring onion stew"

ちょっと疲れた見た目ですみません。

スイスチャード。
食べたことのない野菜がまだまだたくさんあるものですね。
カナダで初めて食べたビーツ、それにルバーブ、赤い初もの多いです。ちなみにこれは茎が黄色いのやオレンジなの、白いのもあるようです。
Swiss chard. New vegetable to me. I even couldn't imagine what it tasted like. I thought they were beets' leaves when I saw at a store.

日本であまり見かけない野菜の調理法をネットで検索してみると、やっぱりガーリックソテーとか、油やチーズなどを使って調理する料理法が多くて、またオイルかぁ。。。と作ってみるのを後回しにしてしまったり、食べたい気分でなかったりしました。なので冷蔵庫でしなしなに。。。
そんな時に、先月号のマーサステュワートさんの雑誌を図書館で見ていた時に見つけたのが、あの有名な日本人シェフ、”Nobu"さんこと松久信幸さんの普段のお食事のレシピでした。そのなかにスイスチャードのおひたしが載っていたのです。
材料はスイスチャードとお醤油と鰹節、それだけ。どんな味なんだろう、すごく食べたいと思いました。
Swiss chard is not common vegetable in Japan, I had never had it before. I was curious and bought a bunch. I searched "Swiss chard recipe" on Internet, but all I saw was something like to saute with garlic or to cook with cheese or milk/cream. I like to eat simple and I am not a big fan of garlic sauteed things.
Then I saw an article about Chef Nobu Matsuhisa in Martha Stewart magazine at the library, he showed "Swiss chard Ohitashi" recipe there. As soon as I saw it, I decided to make it.  

ほうれん草のおひたしよりも、苦味がなくて、私の茹でが足りなかったのか、太い茎の部分はさくさくして、それが逆にすごくおいしかったです。これはとても食べやすいお野菜。ジュリは色をみて引いてしまっていたけれど、ほうれん草よりも食べやすいのでは？定番入り決定です。
やっぱりこういうシンプルでこってりしていないものがずっと食べたいもの、なのかも知れません。特にそういうものを食べて育ってきた日本人には。
It was very simple, I have grown up eating "spinach ohitashi" quite often but Swiss chard one was the first time. You only need Swiss chard, soy sauce, and bonito flakes, no oil, no garlic. :)
I loved it, I thought it had less bitterness than spinach and I liked the texture of the stems. Maybe I have grown up with this kind of simple food, my stomach was happy with the dish. I am very sure to make it again and again, and again.  

とは言っても、レシピ本を写真集のままで終らせないプロジェクト、細々と続けています。
今日はジェイミーの誕生日。３８歳、おめでとう。
と言うことで、冷蔵庫の中身と材料がぴったりと合ったスープを作りました。
I miss Japanese foods very much ....but I am still doing Jamie recipe books project.

p160, p161 "Cod, potato and spring onion stew"

ズッキーニ、リーク、ポテトと白身魚（これはレシピにあるようなお魚屋さんから買った新鮮なものでなく冷凍で）、そしてアンチョビの入ったミルクベースのスープです。
写真は白っぽいスープなんだけれど、私のはかなり緑になってしまった。どうしてだろう。
ズッキーニをスライスして入れるんじゃなくて、「削って」と書いてあったので、チーズ削りで削ったらかなり色が出てしまいました。しかも、削る前に「たてに半分に切って、中心の味のないふわふわしたところをスプーンで取り除いてから削って」とあって、そんなこと今までズッキーニを使う時にしたことがなかったので意外でした。
It was because I had all the ingredients that I needed for the soup. Only one thing was the cod was not fresh from a nice fish store, it was frozen.
The picture in the recipe book, the soup looked quite whitish, but mine turned out very greenish. I don't know why, maybe zucchini?
It was fun to grate zucchini. He also says "with a teaspoon, remove and discard the fluffy tasteless core from the courgettes" in the recipe, I had never done it before and I thought it was interesting. 

これ、おいしかったです。ジュリもペロリと完食でした。６人分は多いと思って半分の量で作ったのですが、それでも魚が５００ｇも入ります。ジュリがお魚食べてくれて嬉しいな。ジェイミーの白身魚のスープやフィッシュケーキ、ジュリは好きなんですよね、こちらの人好みの魚臭さがない感じがいいのかもしれません。
It was mild and good. Juliett eat it very happily, no complaining. :) We all liked it.
It uses lots of cod, so I was glad that Juliett had much fish. Juliett likes Jamie's fish recipes, she liked his fish cake, and other soup too. Maybe because they don't have very fishy smell or flavours in them. 

飾りのフラットパセリがなくて、あったらもっときれいだったろうに、残念でした。
この町のスーパーには普通のくしゃくしゃのパセリはあるけれど、フラットパセリはありません。
It would be nice if I had flat leaf parsley, but I didn't. I looked for it at the super market in town the other day, but they didn't have one there.

p42, p43 "Unbelievable root vegetable salad"

これは昨日の夕食にチキンとアスパラに添えて。
ビーツ、にんじん、ラディッシュ、フェネルバルブはあったけれど、ラディッキオというのがありませんでした。これ、ラディッシュと始まりが似ているから、勝手にかぶの一種だと思っていたのだけれど、調べてみたらチコリーみたいなのの紫のものなんですね。スーパーで見たことあったかなぁ。。。　
I made the salad for supper yesterday, I had all ingredients but radicchio. So this salad was without radicchio. When I read the ingredients, I thought radicchio was a kind of radishes. But it is more like chicory. I should try it someday.

ジェイミーはビーツのサラダの時に、よく「できれば全部違う色のビーツで」と書いているけれど、お店でピンク色の以外、見たことがありません。オレンジっぽいのとかマーブルのとかあるようです。私はその濃いピンクを他の色の分も使うので、ビーツのサラダはもう他の野菜にも色が染みて、まっピンクになります。。
Jamie says "3 fresh beetroots (all different colours if possible)" but I have never seen orange-ish one or marble one before. So I always use the dark red ones and the juice makes everything really dark pink and it doesn't look pretty.

色はかなり濃くてサラダの見た目がジェイミーのほど美しくないのですが、このサラダ、すっごいシャキシャキで気にいっています。フェネル、これで買うのは２度目。歯ごたえがいいですね。主人も私もずっとつまんでいられます。別のドレッシングを自分好みに考えてみたいなと思いました。
写真でとてもディルに良く似た葉っぱがサラダ全体にかかっていて、その印象が強くて、週末にディルを買ったのだけれど、レシピを読んで作っているうちに、それはディルじゃなくてフェネルの葉っぱだと気づきました。さぁ、一袋買っちゃったディルをどうしようかな。。。また魚料理かな。
When I saw the photo of the salad in the book, I thought the green thin leaves were dill, so I bought dill the other day, but when I started making it and read through the recipe, I knew it was not dill but fennel tops. They look very similar to me!
Well, I have to use the bag of dill for something, maybe we will have more fish meals soon. 

さぁ、１年生も残り１ヶ月。
今日、来月の予定が配られたのだけれど、イベントの多さに、もうこの６月はほとんど遊びに学校に行くようなものだと感じました。遠足、父の日パーティー、夏休み中の誕生日の生徒たちの早めパーティー、牧場見学？、プールパーティー、童話パーティー、アメージングレース、モリモリ、盛りだくさんです。（勉強もモリモリ頑張ってほしいところ。）
Only a month to the end of the school year.
A field trip and many parties, they will have so many fun events in June at school.

おまけの写真はジュリが散歩時に見つけた「星のタンポポ」。
ようやくこちらもタンポポの季節になり、毎日ジュリが学校帰りに摘んでお水にさしてくれます。
Juliett found this "star dandelion" on the way to the labyrinth yesterday.
Finally we have many, many, so many dandelions blooming. Juliett brings some home everyday. :)

custard pudding / busy Juliett / reading etc..

週末は雨、雨、雨、と言う予報。
金曜日も雨で、ジュリはハロウィーンの時に使ったメリーポピンズの黒長靴と黒い傘を嬉しそうに持って学校に行きました。飛べそうな気がする、のだそう。
雨の週末。なんとなくこのごろドタバタの毎日を一旦リセットする静かでいい時間を過ごしています。
It has been rain, rain, rain.
Juliett looks happy to use her rain coat and her umbrella & boots(her Mary Poppins's).
It has been a bit busy so it is nice "re-set" quiet weekend for us, I think.

おやつにカスタードプリン、作りました。
金曜の夜にどうしても食べたくなって。「あぁ、コンビニがあったら濃厚プリンかすぐに買えるのに！」と一応叫んでみたけれど、ここは日本じゃないので食べたかったら作るしかない。面倒くさいなぁと思いつつ、レシピを見たら、おいしそうな材料にさらにどんどん食べたくなって、夜９時に作り始めました。カラメル作りはいい匂いで幸せでした～！
冷やさなきゃならないから結局食べられたのは昨日の朝で、時差が。。。。その頃にはプリン熱も冷めていたのだけれど。。とってもおいしかったです。
I made custard pudding for dessert. I suddenly wanted to eat it so much at 9:00 night, in Japan we have many convenience stores around and they sell really good desserts there, so you can just go and get some even 11:00 at night, or later, but we are in Canada, especially in a small town. I know I have to make it if I really want to eat. I made it, and we ate it next morning(need to be cooled in fridge), at that time my passion was gone but the pudding was still really good dessert. I love bitter caramel sauce.

今まで子供たちの本読みを聞くボランティアをしていたクラスだけれど、町のプールでスイミングクラスが始まり、週に２日その付き添いのボランティアにかわりました。２０分かけて１キロちょい先の丘の上のプールまでクラスみんなで歩くのに付き添い、更衣室での手伝い、そして３０分間子供たちがクラスを受けている間はボランティアのママたちとそれを見ながらおしゃべり、そしてまた着替え、学校まで一緒に歩く、だいたい２時間のお手伝い。気候が気持ちいいので楽しいです。お手伝いなんて必要ないくらいみんな元気にしっかりと自分たちのことをします。私はそんなこともなかったら外にあまり出ないので、いい散歩です。来月末まで続きます。
I have been volunteering at school twice a week, the students have swimming class at the pool, they walk to the pool(1km away) and walk back to school. Parents volunteers walk with them and help them at changing rooms and walk back to school with them. I like it, I have seen many other parents, that give me chances to talk to them, it is always nice to walk in town surrounded by the beautiful mountains and it is fun. 

ジュリはクラスのお友達とも完全に馴染み、仲良くなって、暖かくなってからはプレイデートやお誕生日会で週末何かしらイベントが入っている生活になりました。昨日は「夜」がテーマのお誕生日会。パジャマで行きました。
Juliett loves her school which is really good. Since it has been warm and nice, she has something every weekend, playdates or birthday parties. It was a "night" theme birthday party yesterday and dress code was PJs. She had so much fun there. (as always)

この間そんなジュリを見て、気づいちゃったんです、お友達と私のことを話すとき、もう「マイ　マミィ」って言わないで、「マイ　マム」って言ってる。そう言えば、クラスのボランティアに行っても、「私は自分のこと自分で全部出来るから、他のお友達手伝ってあげてね。」と言う。
プレイデートも去年は私も一緒になって「こんなクラフトしよう！」「パンを焼こう！」なんてやっていたけれど、今年はもう完全に自分たちで遊んでいて、おやつに「お腹すいた」ってくるくらい。友達の家で遊ぶ時は私も送って迎えに行くだけだし。
Recently I realised that she didn't say "my mommy" when she talked about me to her friends, she said "my mom" . She also said to me that she didn't need help so go and help the others when I went volunteer to school.
Playdate is different from kindergarten time, kids just play themselves and they only need me to provide snack or when they need help. I don't need to do something like "let's bake bread, kids!" or "let's do craft, kids!". 

さみしいなぁ。。。もう自立か。なんてちょっと思ったり。嬉しいことでもあるのですが。
I am happy to see her growth, but sometimes I feel " Oh, Juliett, slow down, please don't be independent so quickly, let's have time together more." :) 

そんなだんだん別々の時間が多くなってきた日々だけれど、欠かさず毎日作っている時間は本読みの時間。これだけはやらないと何だか心に穴が開いたような気分になります。
But even we spent each own time separately, Juliett and I never forget to have reading time together at the end of the day and the time is what we love. 

この数週間に読んでいたのは図書館でリクエストしたメリーポピンズの続編、「メリーポピンズ　カムズバック」。やっぱりおもしろかったです。人を弾きつける楽しいお話がいっぱい。ジュリが話に引き込まれてジェーン（女の子）を心配して泣いちゃったり（最後はハッピーエンドで笑顔）、前回同様、メリーポピンズがいなくなってしまうところは私が涙をこぼしながら読んだり、読みすぎて夜遅くなってきているのにどうしても続きが聞きたくて（ジュリ）読みたくて（私）、遅くまで読んだり。
あと２冊メリーポピンズのお話があるということで、次の１冊、また図書館でリクエストしました。（リクエストすると、その本が他の図書館にある場合、取り寄せて貸してくれます。）
We use the library request system often. I have just finished reading "Mary Poppins Comes Back" that Juliett and I liked a lot. Juliett cried when Jane was in trouble, I again cried reading when Mary Poppins left.
Usually I read one chapter each night but sometimes a chapter was so long and we had to stop in the middle but Juliett wanted to listen more, I wanted to read more, then we couldn't stop reading until the chapter ended. 

それを待つ間に読み始めたのは「秘密の花園」。これも図書館のリクエストで。
ジュリはやっぱり自分が関わったお話、と言うことで、流れもわかっているし、興味もある様子。読んでいるとメリーポピンズよりも少し難しい印象なんだけれど、一生懸命聞いています。
The next Mary Poppins book is on request, while we are waiting for it, I started reading "The secret garden" that we requested a while ago. My impression of the book is that it is a bit harder than Mary Poppins stories but Juliett knows the story and she feels familiar because she was in the play, so she is interested in listening the original story.

こうやって私が子供の頃に触れることがなかったお話に今自分の子供と一緒に出会うことができて幸せだなと思います、とにかく読むのが楽しいし、あとでジュリと何かのきっかけで一緒にその話を思い出すことができるのも嬉しい。
I am so lucky to have to meet those books that I didn't read when I was little. It is so nice to read those books to her, it must be good for me to learn English, also it is always fun to remember about the stories with Juliett.

ちなみに、彼女一人では、もうこの頃は妖精シリーズの本にどっぷりはまって、ベッドでずっと読んでいます。私はあんまり好きな感じではないんだけれど、まぁ私も小学生の頃そういうシリーズもの、クレヨン王国とか名前覚えていないけれど何とかシリーズとか読んでいた気がするし、クラスのお友達も読んでいるようなので、そういう時期だと思うし、とりあえず読書には変わりないので応援しています。
Juliett, when she has her own reading time, she reads these books, she loves the fairy series. I am not a big fan of it, but I understand that, when I was young I read that kind of books and shared with my friends. Her friends read the fairy books too, and they like to pretend fairies at recess. :)

主人はシェイクスピア風コスチュームを先生方みなさんから大絶賛されたと言って嬉しそうに帰ってきました。こんな素晴らしいものを作ってくれた奥さんにちゃんとお礼しなよとからかわれたそう。どうやら昨日はランチの時間だけでなく、１日中、学校で着ていたのだそうです。
Col told me that his costume was a big hit at his school, that made me smile. Actually I was told that was awesome by some teachers who we saw in town this weekend by accident.

カナダの反対側、オンタリオ州に家族に会いに行って来た友達から思いがけなくお土産をもらってルン♪　私の印象ではカナダの人ってお土産を買う習慣が日本ほど強くない感じ。なのでびっくりしました。スリフトストアでヴィンテージ生地を探したりするのが好きな私の編み物友達、かわいい刺繍ものやヴィンテージ生地を買ってきてくれました。
My crochet & knitting friend went to Ontario to see her family and brought me some souvenirs! How lovely they are, the vintage fabric, we both like flea markets and thrift stores to see vintage things, it was really nice of her to get something for me. My impression of Canadian is that they don't get souvenirs so much, Japanese people love to get souvenirs for friends and family, so I was surprised to receive it from her. I am looking forward to useing them.

Shakespearean style

主人が高校の英文学の先生から１枚の招待状をもらってきたのは、３週間前のこと。
Col brought home a lunch invitation from his school about 3 weeks ago.

「英文学クラスと、ドラマ（劇）クラス、美術クラス、選択教科の美容クラスがみんなで一緒になって、シェイクスピアをテーマにランチ兼発表会をします。
参加できる方（先生）はドレスコードをシェークスピアの時代の服装でよろしく。」
ちなみにこの招待状、昔使われていた英語で書かれていました。
It was about a luncheon party provided by English, Drama, Art, and Cosmetology departments at school. They were going to have a Shakespearean theater. And it also said that all guests were required to wear something traditional Shakespearean clothing for the event.

最初これを読んだ時、先生の家族も行けるのかと思って、ジュリと私も一緒に参加したい！と言ったのだけれど、教員のみ、と言うことで、主人のみ参加決定。
なぁんだ。。。楽しそうだと思ったのになぁ。
Wow! It sounded so exciting. Juliett and I wanted to join it too, but that was only for teachers. 
(Later, I realized that it was good that Juliett and I didn't attend to it.)

これらは英国のシェイクスピアの町を訪れた時に買いました。

。。。ところで。
シェークスピアの時代の頃の格好って、何となく浮かぶけれど、そんなものどこで仕入れたらいいの？と言う疑問が浮かんできました。どうやら生徒たちはアメリカの衣装のお店から買ったかなりちゃんとした衣装を着て舞台やそのイベントをするのだそう。
Well..... it does sound very exciting, I can imagine what kind of clothes Col needs to wear, but where can we get it for him? That was our question. 

ジュリの探偵の格好の時にも書いたけれど、この町には何か衣装を準備する時に、それを手に入れられそうなお店もなく、この２週間は遠出もしなかったので、この日曜に大きな町に買出しに行くその時に賭けていました。
I wrote the same thing when Juliett went to school on their future career dress up day, we don't have thrift stores in town and it was so hard to get materials for making costumes or dress-up clothes.
We planned to go to GP on last Sunday, so Col and I were hoping to get something at thrift stores there.

でも。
スリフトストアを２軒回ったけれど、ハロウィーンの時期でもないし、そんな衣装どこにもなく。。。困った。たくさんお金をかければ、私たちもオンラインの衣装のお店などで買えるのかもしれないのだけれど、ゲストとして呼ばれ１時間ほどのランチに、その出費はうちでは不可能。
でも困ったねぇ。。。
But... it is not Halloween season yet. We didn't see any costume-look clothes there.
Of course if we pay a lot, we could buy proper costumes online, but for an hour lunch party we can't afford it.

そんな時に、私、思い出しました。
「そういえば、私のあの魔女のコートはスリフトストアで厚手で豪華なカーテンを2ドルで買って、作ったなぁ。」
Oh, no... we don't have anything right for the party... Col looked disappointed and he said that he couldn't attend to it without costumes on. Hmmm..... :(

「カーテン！それはいい！いいカーテンがあれば君なら作れるかも！」と主人。
Then I remembered my Halloween costume and said to him, " You know, I made the Halloween witch coat out of a piece of curtain."
"Curtain! That's a great idea, let's see if they have nice materials."

あわててヴァリューヴィレッジのカーテン売り場に。
そしたら、あったんです、金色でちょっとキルト風になっていて、これ、何気にいい衣装になるんじゃない？という厚みのあって刺繍のされたカーテンが２枚で１３ドル。
「この生地から、ベストとかぼちゃみたいなパンツを作って欲しい。」と主人。
We went to Value Village and Col actually found quite nice looking curtains. The two pieces of curtains were gold, thick fabric, they were not quilted but the embroidery looked like a kind of quilted. They were $13.
"Do you think you could make a vest and pants from these curtains?"

取り掛かったのは次の日の月曜日。ランチ会は金曜日。準備期間は４日間あります。
主人から「ダブレット」というジャケットに近い形のイメージのベストを、下はかぼちゃパンツで、というリクエストを受けて、インターネットでイメージをいろいろ見ながら、作り始めました。
I wasn't sure, I have made some costumes for Juliett but not for Col. I was a bit stressed out but anyway I had to start making them as soon as possible, I only had 4 days to prepare. I started measuring him on Monday night.
Col wanted to wear a vest looked like "Doublet", and pumpkin pants. I looked up internet websites and learned the style and started making them.

とりあえず見た目がよければいい、急がなくてはならない、と言うことで、ろくに裾の始末もきれいにしなかったけれど、ヨークの部分だけはあるとすごく便利だと言うことがわかって、適当にヨークを作り、ベストを作りました。主人サイズともなると、どれのパーツもすごく大きくて、縫うのが大変だった。
It was good that we got two pieces of curtain, Col is so tall and big,  I was surprised how much fabric I needed to make the vest. 

カーテンのいいところは布の始末がきちんとされていること。今回はベストの下の部分につけたひだの部分はカーテンの下の部分を折って縫い付けました。これで結構格好良くなった。
基本の形が出来たら少し気分的に余裕が出てきて、さらに家にある材料でもうちょっとそれらしくなるように手を加える楽しみが出てきました。肩の部分を作ったり。襟は本当はあの雨細工のような、ミルフィーユのような、おいしそうなレイヤーの襟を作りたかったのだけれど、布を折って絞って、それをいくつ作っても主人の首の周りを豪華にまわる量にならず断念。なので、家にあった白い布に接着芯をつけてレースを周りに縫って別の形の襟を作りました。ちなみに絞った布はゴムで絞り直して手首周りに。
Also, the good point of using curtains is all edges of the curtains were hemmed really nicely. I used the bottom of the curtains for the vest's pleats(bottom). That gave me less work.
I wanted to make a nice collar, like the one which has layered beautifully. But I didn't have enough fabric to make it, I tried though. So I made the flat collar with laces on the edge and we decided to use the folded fabric for wrists.

かぼちゃパンツはボリュームをなるべく出したかったので、パンツだけでカーテン１枚使いました。ジュリに見せたら、「ジュリが４人入るパンツだね。片足に２人ずつ。」って。（笑）　
To make the pants, I used a whole big piece of curtain. I thought that would give nice volume. Juliett was really surprised to see the huge pants before I put elastic in. She said that four Julietts would fit in the pants!

ほんと、床に置いてみると、とても大きな衣装。
いつも横にいて歩いているから気にしないけれど、うちの主人、背も２ｍ近いので、ジュリの衣装作りになれている私にはガリバーの衣装を作っているような気分になりました。縫っても縫ってもまだ続く。
心配して首周りを大きめに作りすぎて、首の部分がとても出てしまうので、生地を追加して首のところを少ししめたので、首周りが２重になってしまったけれど、襟とあとナプキンみたいので隠してとりあえずOK。
I used almost all curtains we bought. It was a big work for me who had only made some costumes for my daughter. I made the neck too wide, so I added more pieces and covered with the collar. Col wanted me to make the ribbon?(I don't know what to call it, maybe lacy scarf?), so I made it from my left over fabric. I thought it looked OK.

はじめは義務的な気持ちで「そんなの作れるかなぁ。。」とストレスに感じたのだけれど、だんだん楽しくなってきて、近くにスリフトストアが数店あったら良かったなぁと切実に思いました。そしたらよくあるクッションカバーのタッセルとかをウエスト部分につけたり、襟だってもっと豪華なレースがつけれたりできただろうに。
At the beginning, I worried more than I enjoyed making the costume because I didn't have patterns and I had never made clothes for men before. But as soon as I made the basic vest, I started enjoying making and adding details. I really wished if we had good thrift stores around though, then I could get more interesting parts(tussels or ribbon, lace and more fabric). 


楽しかったけれど、家族も招待できるイベントでなくて良かったと作りながら思いました。これにさらに女性用のドレスなんて絶対作れなかった。主人のだけで私は十分です。
最後の調整をして今夜ギリギリ完成。
I had fun making them, but I was glad that I didn't need to make costumes for Juliett or myself. I even don't know how to make gorgeous dresses (out of other curtain).

主人からは「想像以上の出来に、満足以上に満足。」とのコメントをもらってとても嬉しい。着てもらったら、私が本当にこれを作ったの？と思わず言ってしまうほどなかなかの出来でした。これで小さな家族の公認衣装担当に昇格かな。お礼はいらないから、ブログに衣装を着て友情出演してくれと頼んだら、首以下でOK出ました。
Col was very satisfied and told me that the costume was much better than he imagined. That's good. He doesn't like to be on blog, but he said it was OK if I show only under head, so I trimmed a photo.

ケールを買いました。
体にすごくいい、といろんなところで聞くのでどんな味かと思って。
I bought Kale for the first time, I have heard that Kale was really good for your health and wanted to try it.

ジェイミーのレシピでは気軽に食べられそうなものが見つからなかったので、素材の味を楽しむために、あちこちで見かける「ケールチップス」を作りました。
オリーブオイルとシーソルトを絡めて、オーブンで焼くだけです。
I made Kale chips. It was so simple and good, the leaves turned sooooooooo crunchy.
Next time I would add less oil, but we enjoyed it very much.

すっごいサクサク。おいしかったです。あんまり強い香りや苦味とかもないし、食べやすかったです。ちょっとオイルつけ過ぎたかも、次回はもっと少なめに。

I only made burgers.

楽しかった３連休の締めはハンバーガーで。
このハンバーグはジェイミーには珍しく、いろんなスパイスやハーブが入らなかったです。その代わりにパルメザンチーズがたくさん入って、パン粉の代わりにクラッカー、自分が普通に作るハンバーグとまた少し違って新鮮でした。
バーガーにつける、スパーシーマヨネーズのレシピも一緒にあって、作りました。
なかなかおいしかったですよ。ちょっとだけピリ辛で。普段はトマトケチャップとマスタードで食べるハンバーガー、ヨーグルトやレモン汁のいっぱい入ったソース（スパイシーマヨのこと）で食べるのはなかなか新しい感じでした
My image of Jamie is using many herbs and spices for his cooking, but for this burger(patty), I only needed sea salt and pepper, and Parmesan cheese. And instead of using bread crumbs, I needed crackers. It was very simple and I kind of liked the cheese favour in the patty.
I also made "spicy mayo" for the burgers too. Usually we use ketchup and mustard, so it was new to me to have the interesting sauce. The yogurt, spice and lemon juice made gave a nice flavour. 

ジュリはパンにハンバーグをはさんで食べるけれど、ケチャップもマスタードもバターも何もつけません。トマトやレタスはパンにはさんで一緒に食べるのが苦手で、全て別々にお皿に載せて分けて食べます。食べてくれるだけいいけれど。。おもしろい食べ方だなぁといつも感じます。子供って結構そうなのかな？みんないっしょに食べた方がおいしいと思うけれど、いつかはそうなるのかな。
Juliett eats hamburgers but she wants to put only a patty in buns(even no ketchup or mustard or butter), then eats lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers, cheese separately. She doesn't like to eat it together. I always think that is interesting way to eat, it is still good because she eats vegetables too though. I wonder someday she will find it is delicious to eat all together?

Patricia Lake パトリシア湖

ジャスパー国立公園に行って来ました。
今日はもう、自然の美しさに感動して胸がいっぱい。
たくさんブログに載せられるように写真を撮ってきたので、写真だけいっぱい載せます。
カナダのロッキー山脈の春の様子をお楽しみくださいね。
We went to Jasper yesterday, I was so impressed by the beautiful nature there.

I took so many photos there, I won't write so much but put lots of photos in this post.

ジュリとこの日帰り旅行でどのくらい野生動物が見つけられるか
チェックリストを作って出発しました。
Juliett and I made a "wild life I spy list" for her.
She was excited how many animals/birds/flowers/bugs she would see a day in Jasper.

国立公園の敷地内に入って少し走ると、すぐにこんな景色が広がります。
いつも見ている山とまた違う形、迫力です。
Huge and so beautiful!

まず向かったは Maligne Lake　
まだ湖の真ん中は氷が張っています。

車から降りて湖の周りを散歩。魚釣りしている人がいましたよ。
What a beautiful day!

湖のそばできれいな声で鳴いていたのはWarbler
Yellow-rumped warbler? We saw it by the lake.

ジュリと一緒に松ぼっくりの種を食べきるまで観察しました。
A cute squirrel! Juliett watched it whole the time it ate the pine cone.

カナダギース、おかえり！
Welcome back, Canadian geese!

黒のインパクトがなかなか強い、おしゃれな色合いですね。
Black and white, and gray beige, very stylish!

さて、マリーン湖からのジャスパーの市内に向けて戻る途中、私たちの前を通っていた観光バスが道路に横付けして止まっていました。
道路の途中でスピードを落としたり、ウインカーを出して止まっている車がある時には要注意。車に乗っている人たちの視線の先に、動物がいるかもしれません。
「なんだろう、バスが止まるって鹿とかそういうレベルじゃないよ。」と、徐行しながら追い越しながら見てみると。。。。！
After walking around Maligne Lake, we headed to Jasper downtown. On the way to Highway 16, we saw a tour bus was stopping by the shoulder, "they must be seeing something!" so we slowed down and looked the hill. by the road. We saw....

ブラックベア！斜面で何か食べてました。
時々道路の方を気にして見るので、写真の角度がうまく撮れなかったけれどお顔が見えました！

I couldn't take a nice photo, but we saw the face too. Wow!

これにはかなり盛り上がりました。観光バス、ありがとう。
ジュリも動物リストでまさかの「ベア」をチェックすることが出来ました！

ジャスパー市内を観光。お店を見たり、ランチを食べたり。
ジュリは私が毛糸屋さんに行っている間に、タンポポ摘んだり。
熊の像と写真も。そうそう、実物もこういう鼻と口のところがベージュ色の熊でした。
We had lunch and walked around in down town. Juliett liked the bakery there.

そしてまた湖に向かいます。

カヌーに乗りました。ジュリも私も初！です。
We enjoyed canoeing! 

ダディとマミィが漕いでくれて気持ちがいいよ。
We all liked being on the lake. Nice and relax,.

主人はこういうのが得意なので、上手に漕ぎ方も教えてくれて、スイスイ進みました。
これは楽しい！湖の上、眺めは最高。とても気持ちが良かったです。

カナダ１ドルコインに描かれている水鳥、ルーンも気持ち良さそうでした。
We saw two loons.

一番最初のパノラマの写真はピラミッド湖のすぐ手前のパトリシア湖。
水の色がそれはそれはきれいで、私はバンフへの旅行で見たことがあったけれど、ジュリは初めて見たので、「水がエメラルド色だ！」と本当に感動していました。
Juliett was very impressed by the beautiful colour water at Patricia Lake(the first photo) and some lakes/rivers by highway.

帰り道に。こんなにきれいな色、ゼリーみたいです。
I like the colour too!

山々の迫力が本当にすごくて山の写真１００枚近く撮りました。
Mountains were so cool, I took about 100photos of them.

気持ちよかった！

ジャスパー国立公園の入り口の近くに温泉があります。帰りに温泉に浸かって帰ろうということに。
温泉は水着着用、男女兼用、肩まで浸かる深さと腰までと、小さめの水風呂あり。温泉はこの建物の後ろにあって、大きな山々に囲まれた景色を見ながら入ります。お天気で気温も高く、いも洗い状態でしたが、気持ち良かったです。「温泉」と呼ぶには風情がない感じで、どちらかと言うと温泉プールのようなところでしたが、お湯は天然温泉だそう。かなり山の中をくねくね入ったところにあるのですが、１９２０年代、人々は馬に乗ってこの温泉に来ていたと書いてあって、それはすごいことだと思いました。馬で、あの坂と距離、そして舗装されていなかっただろう道路を。。。
We also went to the hot spring on the way back. It was nice! Quite crowded though.
It was hot springs but not like Japanese Onsen at all, more casual and it was like warm pools in mountains. Juliett and Col liked it a lot, to me being warm bath with swim suits on was a bit strange.
I was surprised to hear that people in 1920's came to the hot springs by horses!

その帰り道。
And... on the way back to the highway,

「あれ、何かいる！」「鹿か？」「ちがう、ヤギ？いや、羊だ！」
"What's that?" "A deer?" "no, a goat? no,no, it's a sheep!"

斜面にさらに３頭、メス４頭のマウンテンシープです。
とても近くて、食べている音が聞こえて、目が美しかった！

熊よりも嬉しかった、羊！会わせてくれてどうもありがとう！！！
今回の旅の１番、ジュリは温泉、主人はカヌー、私はこのマウンテンシープに会えたことです。
This was one of my most exciting moments in Jasper, we saw 3 more sheep on the steep, they were soooooooooooooo beautiful! 

このあと、ハイウェイから山の斜面に熊の親子３頭発見、そして今回は写真すら撮らなかったけれど、鹿、たくさん。帰り道途中で寝てしまったジュリのチェックリストはこちら。

ジュリが見たかったのは、野うさぎとか、ピカ（なきうさぎ）、あとはロビンが（リスト、次のページは鳥）見たかったようなんだけれど、そういう小動物はりすしか会いませんでした。
Juliett wanted to see small cute animals, such as rabbits, pikas, and robins. But we only saw a squirrel.

りす１、ワーブラー１、ファルカン１、ダック２、ルーン２、マウンテンシープ４、熊４、エルク７、カナダギースと鹿３０近く。たくさんの野生動物に会えました。
1 Squirrel, 1 Warbler, 1 Falcon, 2 Ducks, 2 Loons, 4 Mountain sheep, 4 Bears, 7 Elk, and lots(about 30) Canadian Geese and Deer. Wow, we saw so many wild animals and birds.

朝早くから夜まで丸１日ジャスパーで楽しんできました。
観光地ではあるけれど、バンフほど混み混みではなくて、町のサイズもいいなと思いました。
何より、うちから１時間半で行けたと言うことにびっくり。この夏もこの町に暮らせるようだったら、また遊びに行こうと思います。今日見ることができた湖や川はほんのほんの一握り、まだまだいっぱい美しいところがあります。
We spent a whole day in Jasper, now we know that it takes only 1 and a half hours to get there from home. If we can be in this town next year, we will visit there many times through Spring, Summer, and fall for sure!
Col's best of the day was canoeing, Juliett's was the hot springs, mine was seeing the sheep. :)

結婚記念日をお祝いは、レストランやプレゼントでなくてジャスパーに行こう！と決めた私たち。
家族３人、とてもいい時間を過ごすことができました。
Col and I decided to go to Jasper instead of buying gifts each other or going out to a nice restaurant for our 9th wedding anniversary, I thought that was a great choice and I had tons of priceless experiences there!
