a new fish tank

１年半前、２０１２年の２月に買った金魚３匹。
引越しにも元気についてきてくれて、夏休みに１０日間留守した時も日にちをかけてだんだん溶けるえさで元気にしていてくれて、本当に手のかからない、とってもかわいい３匹です。
We bought 3 gold fish one and half years ago.
They grew and they are quite big now.

買った時、小さかった体もぐんぐん大きくなって、初めのころから使っている水槽ではもう窮屈そう。
えさの時間の頃になると、私の姿が見えると口を猛烈にパクパクしながら勢いよく寄ってきて、「ごはんまだ？ごはんまだ？」と。私の動く向きに合わせて３匹で寄り添いながら（争いながら）泳いで、強烈なアピールをします。
たまにバタバタしていてご飯を後回しにしてしまったりすると、水槽の中でパシャーンパシャーンとジャンプまでして（リビングに聞こえるほど）「ごはん、まだ？わすれてないよね？」と。おかげでえさをやり忘れたことはありません。
They are very healthy and happy fish, I feed them twice a day, morning and evening. Around their meal time, they follow me(I mean, if I stand behind the tank, they swim to the side and open/close their mouths. if I stand the side of the tank, they swim that way and wait.) and wait until I feed. If I forget feeding them, they eve jump and make big sounds in the tank and let me know. They are my favourite pets. I enjoy seeing them every day.

とってもかわいくて、私は毎日朝と夕のえさの時の会話、そして、キッチンのカウンターに置いているので、夕食の準備などをカウンターでしている時に３匹を見るのが癒しになっています。
私の祖母と祖父も池で金魚を飼っていました、えさをあげるときにゴーフレットの缶を叩いて音を鳴らすとみんな寄ってきた記憶が。そう言えばうちの両親も叔父・叔母も金魚飼っているなぁ。
My grandparents had lots of gold fish in their pond in their yard. I remember I helped feeding them sometimes when I was very young, now my parents have some gold fish, also my uncle and aunt have some. I guess gold fish is common pet in Japan.

彼らに大きな水槽を買ってあげたいなぁと思っていました。
でも、高いのは経済的に無理。お古をネットとかで探したりもしたけれど、なかなかいい状態とお値段が見つからず。買出しに街にあるペットショップにも寄る度に見ていたけれど高くて。
We have been using the small fish tank but I started to think it was too small for three of them.
I wanted to get a bigger fish tank for them. But we can't afford an expensive one, I have checked Kijiji and pet shop flyers very often. 

そんな先週、ネットで広告を調べていたら、１０ギャロンのガラスの水槽、フィルターとライトつきで４０ドルというセールを発見。土曜日に街に行った時にそのペットストアに直行して、最後のひとつだった水槽を購入できました！
Last weekend, I found a great deal at Pet Smart, 10 gallon glass fish tank with filter and lights for $39.99! Yes! We luckily bought it. 

あぁ。嬉しそう。
早速３匹をこの日曜日に広い水槽に移してあげました。
ちょっと和風を意識して置物も入れました。
See? They are now very happy swimming in the bigger tank.
I bought some accessories for the tank, they give a bit of Japanese flavour to the tank, our fish look really beautiful in it!

かわいい３匹。嬉しそうにすいすい泳いでいる姿を家族で眺めました。
私たちの大事なペットです。これからも長く一緒にいられますように。
We all enjoyed looking at the fish for a while.
I hope they live as long as they can.

おまけはペットじゃないんだけれど、ここのところ毎朝現れる鹿の親子。
うちの裏庭の向こうの斜面にいっぱい雑草が生えていて、そこに朝食をとりに来ている様子。
They are not our pets but deer visit in front of our back yard every morning recently and Juliett and I enjoy observing them. 

今朝は２家族来てました。（朝８時の写真。もうこんなに暗いんです。）
車の音が聞こえたり、人の動きを感じたりするとお尻の真っ白なしっぽがピンと張って、警戒しているのを感じます。逃げる時はすごい高いジャンプであっという間に去っていくのだけれど、それがまた美しい。ジュリも私も、学校に遅れるよって主人に注意されながらもリビングルームの窓に釘付けでした。
This morning, there were 2 groups(I guess 2 moms and 4 does). Every time they see cars coming or hear something, they freeze and their white tails stand like antennas. And when a car passed by, they jumped so high and ran/jumped to somewhere else immediately. Juliett and I were astonished by seeing their high jumps. 

rainbow birthday party!

クラフト友達の娘ちゃんの誕生日会でした。
近所なので、娘同士も仲良くなって、２つ年上のジュリのことをすごく慕ってくれる娘ちゃんとジュリも遊ぶのが大好きで、パーティーを楽しみにしていました。
It was my friend's daughter's birthday party.
My friend and I have some common hobbies such as knitting/crocheting, hiking, and crafting, since we met in the library in winter, we have been having good times together.
We are neighbors, Juliett and the girl became good friends too.

かわいい招待状は手作りの虹のかたち。
最近お互い時間が合わずにあまり話ができていなかったので、お家に着いてびっくり。
とってもかわいい虹色のデコレーションがあちこちにされていて、友達らしいパーティーでした。
We received a cute handmade invitation which shape was rainbow with a cloud.
When we arrived their house, we saw lots of hand made rainbow decorations in their house.
It was a rainbow themed birthday party!

ゲームもクラフトも全部、虹や虹色。バースデーガールは虹色のお洋服を着て。
ジュリが一番年上で、１年生と幼稚園生がみんなで９人。とってもかわいくて、保護者たちの笑顔の絶えないパーティーでした。
Games, crafts, desserts,... all were rainbow themed and I really enjoyed seeing all her works.
It was a wonderful and so lovely party! I love homemade/handmade birthday parties!
The birthday girl turned to 5 years old, so there were many kindergarteners and grade oners there, Juliett was the oldest. Lots of smiling and laughing everywhere in the house, it was really a great party.

子供たちが大きくなって、最近は大きい会場とかプールとかでのパーティーに参加することの多かったジュリ、しかも親は子供を送って迎えに行くだけなので、親子で参加させてもらった久々のお誕生日会でした。
Juliett's age, parents usually don't stay for birthday parties, Juliett has been some big parties at the pool in town or a big party place(hall). I think that their birthday party style change as children grow. I haven't decided what we will do for Juliett's birthday this year. But I really enjoyed the party today, I still would like to add some homemade touch. I need to start planning for the party soon.

こんなに素敵な手作りパーティーを開いてくれた友達、やっぱりすごくステキだな。彼女は編み物や手作りものをファーマーズマーケットで売ったりもしていて、冬に出会って以来、いっぱいいい刺激を受けています。
さぁ、次はジュリの誕生日に向けて、私も何か考えなくては。
大きくなるに連れてスペースもいるし、誕生日会のスタイルも変わっていくだろうけれど、いつまでも何か母親として手作りを何か気持ち加えてあげたいな、と思いました。

we want to see you, beaver!

ビーバーに会いたい。第２弾です。
先週末もあの川に行きました、が、これもまた先に言います、また見られませんでした。
We went to the river again last Saturday and we hoped to see a beaver this time.
I again tell you first, we didn't see any. :(

結構楽しみに見ているDavid Suzuki さんのテレビ番組、 "The Nature of Things" 、昨日はビーバーについてで、さすがにこれはうちの家族にとってはかなり今熱い話題と言うことで、みんなで見ました。すごいですね、ビーバー。ダムを一晩で作れるそうです。
We watched "The Nature of Things" last night, it was about beavers. Juliett and I sometimes, actually quite often watch the show to learn about animals and nature things, yesterday we all(Col too) watched the show. We learned that beavers can build a whole dam a single night.



さて、先週、林の方からダムに歩いて様子を見た時に、ビーバーダムにつながる小川の先はどこにあるのだろう。。。と言う話になり、川の先を探してみよう、と言うことになりました。
Well, on Saturday, we looked for the other side of the dam, so we walked by the big river until we found a small stream which connected to the dam. 

大きな川に沿って回り道をし、そこから脇に流れる小川を発見。ずっと先でビーバーダムにつながることを発見。

おんなじことを考えている人はいっぱいいるようで、なんとなく草が倒れたりしている、人が歩いたような様子が見られます。私たちも小川（ダム）にそって歩いてみたら、もしかしたらビーバーロッジ（木で覆った棲み処）を見られるかもね、と歩き始めました。
We walked by the stream(dam), the water is still, so quiet, we tried to be very quiet too.
I was hoping to see at least a beaver lodge on the stream.

不思議な空間です。
ダムの水はくもった水色。私たちが枯葉や枯れ枝の上を歩く足音以外、本当にしーんとしています。私たちも足音を立てないように忍者歩き。
あちこちにビーバーが削り倒した大きな木があります。
削り途中の木もあります。
It was an interesting experience, it was so quiet and I felt we were in a wonderland or somewhere special. The water was very whitish blue, beautiful, and lots of green around, and there were so many trees that were chewed by beavers!

Such big trees...I wondered why they chewed the big trees even they couldn't carry to their dam.
Col told us(my question is sometimes the same level with Juliett's) that they need to chew anyway to keep their teeth nice condition(they keep growing) and they can't climb a tree so they chew and knock it down and then until sugar inside of the tree gone they eat as their food.

すごい。

あの動物がこんなに太い木をこうやって何本も。。。
こんな太いのをダムに使ったり出来ないのに、どうして？と主人に聞いたら、
ビーバーは歯が伸び続けるから木を削って歯を適切な長さに保たないといけないし、木の皮や歯を食べるけれど、木に登れないから倒してそれが完全に枯れちゃう前に食べたりもするしね、と。
なるほど。

木の皮を食べきった、つるっつるの木の枝もぷかぷかダムに浮いていました。
There were some totally peeled off branches floating on the dam.

通り道のようなものも見つけました（写真右）。
ダムの岸のちょっとぬかるんだ辺りには鹿の足跡もいっぱい。 鹿やエルクとビーバー、これでフクロウが木にとまっていたりしたら、もう私には夢のようなシーンです。
We found some ways beavers use.
We also saw many deer footprints by the dam.

なかなか長いいい感じの小川（ダム）でした。でも、ビーバーロッジもなく、歩く先にもうビーバーダムが見えてきてしまいました。今日も見られなかったね、と、気を抜いた瞬間、一番後ろを歩いていた主人の変な叫び声みたいのが聞こえて、慌てて振り返ると、彼の（長い）足がひざまで地面に埋まって、それを慌てて抜き出していました。
It was quite a long dam, but narrow. We didn't see a beaver lodge. When we saw the dam ahead, Juliett and I were a bit disappointed that we didn't see any beavers or even a lodge this time either.

Then, suddenly we heard Col's strange, a kind of scream. He was walking behind us by the dam, and we quickly turned and saw what happened to him.
What I saw the first was he was pulling his leg from a mud hole so panicky,  it was like he was pulling his leg from an alligator's mouth. Or, it was like he was pulling his leg from quicksand.


本当の慌てぶりで、私は有り得ないんだけれど、ワニが出てきて足を飲み込もうとしているのか、もしくは、クイックサンドに足を飲み込まれたのかととっさに思って、すごく焦って駆け寄りました。
I couldn't understand what had happened to him, I was so scared and almost had a heart attach, but after he pulled his leg out from the mud, he told us that maybe under the bank there was a hollow or cave or something and his weight pushed it through to it.
I was glad that he wasn't bitten or eaten by something.
We hoped that he didn't break beavers' home.... we didn't see any angry or panicked beavers around.

どうやら主人は結構水の近くを歩いていて、ただゆるんでいた泥にはまったのか、もしくはその川岸の下にビーバーが穴を掘っていて、天井を抜いてスポッとそこに落ちたか。
念のため探したけれど、穴からビーバーの気配は全くなかったからただのゆるい泥にはまっただけだと願いたいのですが。

今回もビーバーの姿を見られなかったけれど、ビーバーの世界を少しだけ見せてもらってとても勉強になりました。あの体であのダムをほぼ１晩でねぇ。。。すごいです。本当に。
ビーバーは冬眠しないので、ビーバーに会いたい、は、また気の向くままに続きます。
It was an adventure, we were excited walking by the dam.
We will visit there again, beavers don't hibernate,  so we might have a chance to see them in late fall or winter time.

さて。
今日は天気があまり良くなくて、山のほうは雪が降っている感じが見えました。
ジュリを迎えに行った帰り道には、夏に登ったグランドマウンテン（上の写真右）の頂上も雪がのっていました。そんなに高い山じゃないから、町に雪が届くのももうすぐなんじゃないかなと。
もう少し秋の山の様子を楽しみたいものです。
It has been cloudy/windy/sometimes rainy these days, today Juliett and I noticed that there was some snow on the top of Grande Mountain which we hiked up in summer. I hope the beautiful fall season will last a bit longer.

more aran knitting

ブルブルブルッ。
寒くなってきました。昨日の夜、向かいの山には雪が結構積もって、私たちの町も夜中に雪かもという予報が出ていたけれど（多分降らなかったと思うんだけれど）、朝起きて窓の外を見たら、昨日まで青かった山々がいきなりこんなに雪をかぶっていました。
It is getting cold. Last night, we didn't have snow(the weather forecast said we would have some), but the mountains got quite a lot of snow. The mountains looked very different this morning.

まぁ、まだ雪は浅いから、山の斜面の感じ、太陽が当たるところ、当たらないところ、木の多いところ、アルパイン、雪が粉砂糖を上から振るったようにかかっていて、とてもきれいな白の濃淡が見えます。これからどんどん白が濃くなっていくんですね。寒いのはイヤだけれど、こうやって山の表情を１年間贅沢なほどに見られること、感謝してます。
It is interesting to see the snow on top of mountains. I can see some shady part, alpine area, beautiful lines and winkles on them. I thought I was so lucky to see the mountains through the year, they have be entertaining me so much.

朝、冷たい風で耳が痛い。
耳をカバーできる深い帽子を早めに作っておこうと編んだのはこちら。
右側の帽子です。もう朝は手袋と帽子、欠かせなくなってきました。
My ears ache when I walk to school(and walk back from school) with Juliett in the morning because of the cold wind. I knitted this(on the right) hat for myself.

今回は日本ヴォーグ社の「アラン模様１００」で一番編んでみたいと思っていた模様を組み合わせて作りました。なので、世界でひとつ。
一番難しかったのは、頭の上の部分に進みながらパターンをなるべく崩さずに編み目を減らしていくこと。そういうのはやっぱり編み図があると助かるなぁと思いました。
２つの帽子を比べてみると、編み目を見ても、糸の張り具合を見ても、今回の方がずっときれいに出来た、と思います。まだのろいけれど、前に比べたらスピードも上がったかも。
I have a great Aran knitting pattern book, it shows how to knit 100 patterns, so I picked my favourite patterns and designed the hat by myself.  The hardest thing was decreasing the stitches for the top of the hat. I wanted to keep the patterns so it was more like math than knitting for the part. 

クリーム色の帽子は本を見て去年の５月にジュリ用に作った帽子。ポンポンが１４センチでとっても大きい。ジュリがかぶるとすごくかわいいんですよ。
I made the cream colour one for Juliett last year, she looks so cute in the hat.
To compare those hats I can tell how much my knitting skill has improved and that made me feel happy.

今日ジュリが着たTシャツは Joe Fresh の。価格的にもうちには助かるし、デザインがかわいくて私はとても好きです。デザイナーはクラブモナコを創った方と同じなのだそう。
このTシャツ、ボーダーの下の方の丸がすごくかわいい、ピンクの色もすごくいいし、さらにしかも、ひとつだけハートが混じっているというかわいさ。やるな、と思うのです。
こういうの大好きです。
The T-shirt Juliett was wearing today was by Joe Fresh.
There is a pattern of circles on the T-shirt, but there is a heart hidden in the pattern and I love that! 

Happy 1st Birthday, my little nephew! / my latest project

ジェダイのケーキ台が欲しくて作ったはんこ。

９月２２日は私の小さな甥の１歳のお誕生日。
ちなみに、その父に当たる私の弟の誕生日に生まれたので、弟の誕生日でも。
It's my little nephew's 1st birthday!
He was born on my brother(his father)'s birthday, so it is their birthdays on the 22nd!
Happy Birthday!

お誕生日おめでとう。
１歳（３５歳）も元気に、たくさんの笑顔で家族みな幸せに過ごせますように。

最近出来上がった編み物プロジェクトは、
サイチカさんの「ニットバッグレシピ」文化出版局　から「アランセーターのようなバッグ」。
 I made this bag. The pattern was from a book I bought in Japan.

表紙の写真にもなっているこのバッグに本屋さんで一目ぼれして、買った本でした。
お手本はベージュに赤い糸が１列入るのだけれど、自分には大好きなオートミールとマスタードの組み合わせで。
本当は内布がつくのだけれど、まだこのバッグに似合うような布が見つからず、いつか見つかる時まではこのままで。（と言っても、細いものが編み目から落ちたり、引っかかったりするのがイヤなので、大きな街に行けた時に探す予定）
I changed the colours(in the book, the bag was beige and the stitch was red), I used my favourite colours, oatmeal and mustard! 

この編み模様はなんと言う模様なんだろう。。。
「アラン模様の意味やお話つき」という言葉に惹かれて、アマゾンで何冊か今まで買って両親に送ってもらってきたけれど、どれもすごく有名どころのダイヤモンドとか、蜂の巣とか木とか網とか、そこらへんしか載っていなくて、それ以外のが知りたいのだけれど。。。今こちらの図書館で何冊か取り寄せているので載っていることを期待して。。。それでもわからなかったら、アイルランドにいつか行くしかないかな？（笑）
I would like to know what this pattern means, I have some books of Aran knitting that were published in Japan, but they only tell very famous patterns, such as diamond, cable, honeycomb, and tree. I want to know more about the patterns, I have requested some books about Aran knitting at the library, so I hope I can find more information, if not, maybe I should visit Ireland when we visit England someday. 

ところでこの毛糸、私の住む町にはもちろん毛糸屋さんなんてないし、買出しに行く街にも大手クラフトショップ、マイケルズくらいしかなくて、ずっと使い込むために適した毛糸をじっくりと毛糸屋さんで選ぶなんて出来ないのだけれど、この毛糸はそのマイケルズで買えて、しかもすごく好きな色なので、少ない選択肢の中でいろんな物を作りたいと思えるお気に入りの色の毛糸に出会えて幸せだと思っています。中国製って言うところが少し残念なんだけれど、ウール１００％だし。チクチクしなくて、硬くなくて、編んでいて気持ちがいいです。
I feel very lucky to have favourite yarn that I can buy at Michaels. We don't have yarn stores in town(of course), and I don't see one in GP either. But since I found this yarn at Michaels, I have kept using it for cable knitting. Nice colour, nice feeling, and it is good for cable knitting.

困っちゃうのはこの色オートミールが好きすぎて、その毛糸ばっかり買っちゃうから、私が作るもの（アラン模様もの）はみんな色が同じになってしまうこと。
The problem is that because I use the same kinds of yarn for every cable knitting products, everything I have made was matching....

今まで、去年の甥への誕生のお祝いに編んだブランケットからスタートして、去年の自分の誕生日にシンプルブランケット、それからカーディガン、そして今回のバッグ、ブログに載せてなかったかもしれないけれど、フェルト化させて作ったカメラケース、と、みんなお揃い風に。
The baby blanket for my nephew that I made last year, my blanket, and the cardigan, then this bag, ...too matchy!  

写真はカーディガンと。
そうだ、カーディガン、フードがおしゃれなんだけれど、うまくフィットしなくて、更に編み足してすっぽりと顔のまでかぶれる、山生活で実用的な形に変えました。
カーディガンと並べて撮ったのは、バッグだからすごく簡単だと思って甘く見ていたら何気に後ろ身頃位のサイズだったと気づいたので。
たくさん物が入る大きなバッグです。
I took a photo of the bag's part and my cardigan together, because I thought it would be easy to make the bag at first but it was almost as big as the sweater's back. It was quite a lot of cable knitting.

今、初めてイギリスゴム編み（裏目側引き上げ）というものをやっていみているのだけれど、本を見ながらやり方を学んでいる時に、何かおかしいと思って調べてみたら、私の表編みはプロジェクトによって、時に気分によって逆編みをしてしまっていると言うことに気づき、パニック。
３番目の写真を見ても、良く見ると逆編みしているのがわかります。。。
だからと言ってほどけてしまう、とかそういうマイナス面はないけれど逆編みじゃ均一にならないし、伸びも違うんじゃないかと。
ガックリきたけれど逆に考えれば編み物を勉強して１年半、もっと先にならずに今気づいて良かった間違え。これからは均一に美しく編めるように、途中でいつの間にか逆にならないように、更なる練習のみです。
I started a new project, it needed a new skill, "fisherman's rib". When I was learning how to do it with my knitting book, I realized that sometimes I knitted wrong way(somehow I gave extra twist). :(

I was panicked and disappointed a bit because I have given some my projects to my friend and family. Of course it doesn't give any major damages/problems but if I knitted properly they would stretch more(?), and definitely look more beautiful(evenly).
I checked how to knit on Internet and books again really carefully.
I need more and more practises!    

Otsukimi(moon gazing)

昨日は満月。十五夜でしたね。
楽しみにしていたのだけれど、あいにく雲がかかってジュリが寝る頃には全然見えず、私たちが寝る頃に雲の合間から少し見えました。
It was full moon, it was Jugoya, moon gazing day(Otsukimi) in Japan.
I was looking forward to it, but it was cloudy, Col and I saw the full moon late night but Juliett missed it. 

でも、今朝、学校に歩く時、山の向こうに真っ白の大きな満月が見えて、あれはちょっと感動しました。ジュリもね。
月の模様も良く見えて、日本ではうさぎがお餅をついているなんて言ったりするよとジュリに話したら、彼女も何か見えてきた気がする！と興奮気味。しかも、反対側の空には綿毛みたいな雲がいっぱいちりばめられていて、ジュリはそれにもステキだと。気持ちのいい朝でした。
But on the way to school this morning, Juliett and I saw a beautiful full moon above the mountains. It was very big. Juliett was impressed by seeing it, I told her that in Japan people say that we can see a rabbit making mochi(rice cake) on the moon, and she said that she could see some pictures on it too.

数日前からおしるこがどうしても食べたくて、昨日、十五夜を理由に作りました。
ずっと前に買っておいた小豆。ジュリに見せたら、彼女はあんこが好きなんだけれど、こういうお豆から出来ているって知らなかったから驚いてました。甘さ控えめにしたおいしいおしるこになりました。
On Jugoya, people make offerings of dango(a kind of rice cake balls) and Susuki(a kind of grass) to the moon, I wanted to eat dango(which is Juliett's favourite too), so I made the bean soup and rice cake balls.YUM!

学校の帰りに寄り道をしながらすすき探しをしたけれど、すすきなんて見たことない。
しょうがない、もどきでやるか。と、なんとなくしなっている雑草を抜いていたのだけれど、れんげの残りがやっぱりかわいくて。。
Juliett and I looked for Susuki on the way home from school but I don't know if I have seen it in Canada, I was picking some dried grass and weeds at first but I quit. 

昨日の雲はおもしろかったので、豆を煮ながらデッキで写真を撮っていました。
なんか長細いひょうたんみたいな雲がぷかぷか浮いてました。
早々、あの奥の方のとがった山々には雪が少しのってるのが見えるんですよ。木の色が変わって、山の頂上の辺りと、下の森の部分の色がくっきりと分かれて見えるのがおもしろい季節です。
Talking about the sky, I thought the clouds looked interesting yesterday afternoon. 

Aye aye, Captain!

今日は「海賊の格好をして来る日」。
何で海賊？今日誕生日の友達が今日は「海賊のように話す日」なのよと教えてくれました。
It was "wear like a pirate day" at Juliett's school today.
But why pirates? My friend whose birthday is today told that September 19th was "international talk like a pirate" day! Interesting!

日本だと海賊独自の言葉ってあるのかな？こちらでは絵本などを読んでいると、"Ahoy, matey!"（挨拶）  "Arrrrrr!"  （海賊の叫び声？唸り声？） "Aye, aye, Captain!"（「キャプテン、了解！」みたいな）など、いろいろ出てきます。子供が言うとすごくかわいい。

去年の９月はこの町にいなかったので去年の様子を知らないのだけれど、どうやら結構学校的に大きなイベントの様子。今回はダラーストア（日本の１００円ショップみたいなの）で、海賊の帽子を見つけ（よく出来ていて２ドル）、あとしましまのシャツ、それにキンダーガーテンで海賊スタイルでクリスマスコンサートをやった時のアイパッチを用意していました。
It was the first time for Juliett to have this event at school (we moved to this town in November). At first, I thought it was just one of their many fun days but I found that it was quite a big event for the school.
We didn't have any items for pirates, so we bought a hat at a dollar store(actually it was $2 but it was made really well), and a red and white striped shirt at a thrift store. Juliett had her eye patch from her kindergarten concert.

昨日の夜になって、図書館で海賊の本をジュリに読んであげようと借りていたことを思い出して、数冊読んでいたら、海賊のあの帽子をつけるのはキャプテンとかで、働く部下たちがしましまを着ていることに気づいて、じゃぁキャプテン用のジャケットはないか？去年のハロウィンのメリーポピンズのあのジャケットじゃダメか？ベストはないか？バタバタ探したけれど、そういうものもなくて、困った。。。と主人に話したら、「心配無用。２年生でそこまで気にする生徒はどこにもいないだろう。」と笑われ、ジュリはキャプテン要素が少し入った海賊の格好で行くことに。
Last night, I remembered that I borrowed some books about pirates at the library and read them to Juliett. Then we realized that Captain wears the hat but not a striped shirt, he wears a jacket or a vest. So I started to worry about that because I don't know about pirates and I mixed Captain and workers costumes up. But Col told me not to worry. (he always says that. :)  )
Juliett didn't care about that some items were for Captains and the others were for workers.

肩にオウムを乗せてるよ？と、鳥のぬいぐるみを探したけれど、フクロウしかない。うーん。。。
あっ！オウム。。と言えば、メリーポピンズの傘につけるオウム、作ったよねぇ？
「キューティーがかぶりたいって！」とジュリ。試しにジュリの犬のぬいぐるみ、キューティーにかぶせてみたらぴったりフィット。ずっと学校にキューティーを連れて行きたいと言っていたジュリ、嬉しそうに肩にのせてました。
"How about a parrot? Do we have a bird doll?" "We only have a hooty(owl)"
Hmmmm...... parrot, parrot,parrot,...   ...aha! We DO have a parrot! From her Mary Poppins costume!
"Cutie wants to be a parrot! " Juliett said, we put the parrot head for Mary Poppins umbrella over Cutie's head and it fit all right. Juliett was so happy to go to school with Cutie, she has wished for that for a long time!

今日はラッキーなことに、私もボランティアの日。
本格的に仮装するのも恥ずかしいけれど、クラスにいるわけだしちょっと参加したいと思って、昨日の夜にジュリとお揃いで作った海賊の旗（ジョリー・ロジャー）のバッジをボーダーシャツにつけて行きました。
Luckily it was my volunteer day, for enjoying the fun event, Juliett and I made these Jolly Roger badges and put on each clothes.

学校に着いて驚いた。
スタッフも先生方もみんな本気の海賊。毎年のイベントみたいで、すごく本格的。ジュリの担任の先生、すっごくスタイリッシュな海賊で思わず「あなた、とてもかっこいいよ。」と言ってしまったほど。
子供たちもすっごく工夫していたりで、いやぁ、今日ボランティアさせてもらってすごく楽しかった。
市販のものだろうと思われるフル装備の格好、あのパイレーツオブカリビアン風の格好（ドレッドヘアつき帽子等）、もちろん手作りものもいっぱい、手作りアイパッチ、バンダナを巻いたり、おもちゃの刀を刺したり。本当にみんなとってもかわいくて、ハロウィンもいいけれど、こういうテーマの揃った仮装も学校みんながまとまる感じで楽しいなと見ていて思いました。ダラーストアで買った海賊の帽子はやっぱりみんな同じことを考えるよね、たくさんの生徒がつけていました。
This morning, I was quite impressed by teachers' outfits. Very cool! Juliett's teacher looked so cool.
Also children were so cute in pirates costumes. What a fun atmosphere, I liked that.
Halloween is fun, but everyone wears for the same theme was really fun, I thought that would make classes and school have special, something like "teamwork" feeling.

学校の始まりの校長先生の校内放送も、海賊風に言っていて子供たちワクワクしてました。（私も聞いていて何気に楽しいと思った。）
今日はいっぱい楽しい海賊のゲームや歌やアクティビティーをやるのだそう。
I liked that the principal did announce in a pirate voice. They sure had a fantastic day today.

小学校だけじゃなくて、高校でも時々「OOを着てこよう」イベントがあるのには結構びっくり。特に、私は（多分ほとんどの日本のみんなも）高校・中学は制服だったから、そういうのは全くなかったので。
Talk about "wear something day", I was quite surprised to know that they have that kind of days even at high school. I wore my school uniforms at junior high and high school, and that is quite common in Japan, so we didn't have that kind of casual events at schools. 

主人の高校では少し前に「好きなミュージシャンを着る日」がありました。で、彼はロック歌手とかのTシャツをスリフトストアで探したけれど、全然見つからず結局何も買わずに、当日「１D」と描かれたロゴみたいのを印刷していて、それを胸に貼って行きました。
Col's school had "wear your favourite music group band day" the other day. He looked for a rock singers' T shirt at thrift stores in GP but didn't find any. So he printed One Direction's logo, and pinned to his shirt on the day.

１D、どうやらティーンエイジャーたちに流行のワン・ディレクションのマーク、らしい。私ももうそういうの全然疎くて。。。年とったなぁ。。。
夕方主人が「生徒たちにうけは良かった」と言って帰ってきました。
I have heard about One Direction but I don't know much about them, I even didn't recognized the logo. I thought I wasn't young anymore... :)

コスチューム、と言えばハロウィン。
ジュリの今年のリクエストはかなり簡単で、物足りないくらいです。既にほぼ完成。日本に行った時、ダイソーで何となく「こんなに大きなフェルトも１００円なのねぇ。」と、クラフト用に買っておいた大きなフェルトが大活躍、３枚使ってほぼ衣装が出来ちゃいました。フェルトって本当に役立つ素材。
ジュリは衣装のこと、たいそう気にいっています、たとえ町の人が一人もそのキャラクターのことを知らなくても自分はすごくハッピーなのだそう。
お披露目はハロウィンの時に！
Talking more about costumes, I am almost done making a Halloween costume for Juliett.
It was a very easy this year. Juliett really wanted to be it even people around her won't recognize what she is. I just wanted to make what she wanted to be, so we are happy.
I will show it to you all end of October.

ブルルル・・・ッ。
とうとうきました、マイナスの朝。
マイナス２℃。
Brrrr.... -2C!
It was coooold this morning. 

ドアを開けたら芝も車の窓も霜で真っ白白でした。
マイナス２℃くらいでこんなに寒かったっけ？ジュリを送りに行った帰り道は手と耳が寒さで久々に痛くなりました、この冬の感じ、すっかり忘れていた。。。
I thought -2C wouldn't be so cold and didn't wear warm enough, on the way home my hands and ears were cold, we needed gloves and hats. It is scary to think about the -30C world in winter.

数日前のジュリ。
この夏の始まりに種から育て始めたバジル、やっぱり山の気候では育ちが悪いのかな、毎日お水をあげて太陽をいっぱい浴びさせたのに、これだけしか成長しなかった。
この写真と今朝の写真が同じ週のものだなんて。温度差が激しいです。
A few days ago, we had really hot days. It is really strange to me to see those two photos were taken on the same week. +29C to -2C.
Juliett and I planted many seeds of plants the beginning of this summer but they didn't grow well. We took a good care of them though.
The basil grew quite well, I am looking forward to using some basil leaves for cooking.

バジルとジュリの朝顔は昨日の夜に室内に入れておいて正解。
外に出しっぱなしだったら、今朝凍ってました。
We put the basil and Juliett's morning glory inside last night. That was a good decision. :)

手袋に帽子、明日のために出しておかないと。
I have to prepare hats and mitts for tomorrow morning!

Draemon and his friends

春に日本に一時帰国した時、じぃじとドラえもんの映画を観に行ったジュリ。
その時からドラえもんも好きなキャラクターのひとりになって、ちょうどその頃に新聞に入っていたドラえもんの過去の映画のキャラクターたちの新聞広告を大切にカナダまで持ち帰り、自分のベッドの横の壁に貼っています。（貸家で穴をあけたくないので洗濯ばさみで失礼。）

頑張って描いたドラえもんもなかなか上手。
お友達からいただいたドラえもんの主題歌CDを毎晩聞いて寝ているんですよ。

そんなジュリがこの間ポツリと、ドラえもんの映画DVDを観た後に、

「ねぇ、マミィ、ドラえもんは日本のものなのに、どうして２人は英語の名前なんだろうね。」

２人？
一人はジャイアンのことを言っているんだよね、
ジュリがジャイアンを呼ぶ時 "t" を最後に発音しているのを聞いたことがあるし。
（それを聞いた時ちょっと笑ったけれど）

でももう一人は誰だろう。。。
 「しずかちゃん、ドラえもん、のびたくん、ジャイアン、スネ夫、ドラミちゃん、
他に英語の名前なんてないよ？」



「あるよ、今言ったじゃん、Snail だよ！」

スネ夫、Snail （スネイル：かたつむり）、
確かに発音してみると、「スネィオ」みたいに言うから、笑っちゃうけれどかなり納得。
ジュリは完全にこの６ヶ月、スネ夫をカタツムリと言う名前がついた男の子だと思って見ていた、ということに。変わった名前だと思っていただろうなぁ。。。
（彼は「スネ夫」だよと話したけれど、彼女の中では多分これからも Snail 。）

バスケットはもともとすごく好きで、家には山のようにバスケットがあるのだけれど、実はあまりバスケットについて知らない。スリフトストアでいいタイミングで見つけたバスケットの本はイラスト付きの編み方つき、この秋に読もうと読み始めたところです。細かいイラストまでついたバスケットの作り方の本、いつか自分で編めたらおもしろいかも。
自分の中でバスケットの好きな感じにブームがあって、日本に住んでいた頃は、ロンガーバーガー風のバスケットとか、比較的薄い色のバスケットが好きで集めていたけれど、カナダに越して、今度は色の濃い目のものを（材料は柳かな？）。前に住んでいた家には本当に山ほど、かごがありました。引っ越して結構寄付して数を減らしました。たくさんのバスケットの写真はこちら。
I love baskets! I have so many baskets at home.(here is a photo of some of my baskets)
But I thought I didn't know much about baskets, luckily I found a book about baskets at a thrift store and I am reading it.

前にブログに書いたと思うけれど、私たちが月に一度行く街では金曜土曜とファーマーズマーケットをやっていて、そこに天然酵母のパンとアフリカのバスケットを数個売っている女性がいます。
初めてそのベンダーさんを見つけた時は、いつかで会えたらなと思っていた、ガーナの女性たちがひとつひとつ手作りしているというボルガタンガバスケットに会えたことが嬉しくて、立て続けに２つ大きなバスケットを形違いで購入。両方とも家の中で、外に出かける時にも大活躍しています。
I wrote about a vendor at the farmers' market in GP sells some African baskets a while ago. When I saw it for the first time, I was so happy to see the baskets I have wanted for a long time and bought 2 baskets there. They are very useful, I have been using them a lot in my house and also when we go on a picnic.

いろんな色があって、模様も少しずつ違うから、オンラインでもお店を見つけて悩んだこともあったけれど、やっぱり触って選びたい。そのベンダーさんを見つけてから、ファーマーズマーケットに顔を出して、その日にきているバスケットを見せてもらうのを楽しみにしています。
I see that we can buy the baskets online, but I like to see them and touch them to choose, so I look forward to going to the farmers' market once a month.

少し前に３つ目のバスケットを購入しました。
赤と濃い赤で編まれた下の部分、そして持ち手の部分の皮の感じと色合い、どれもすごく好み。マーケットに入ってベンダーさんの棚が遠くから見えた時から、「あれは決まりだ」と思って直行、ドキドキ購入しました。
A few weeks ago, I saw a beautiful one at the vendor and fell in love with it at once. When I saw it on a shelf far from her vendor, I knew that I would buy it for sure.

素敵でしょう？毎日少しずつ進める編み物道具を入れています、視界に入る度に嬉しくなる大のお気に入りのバスケットです。自分も手作りをすごくするから、ひとつひとつ丁寧に編まれたこのバスケットを特別に感じます。
Isn't it beautiful? I like the details of the handle, and of course, the colours, especially the dark red and red part.
I have used it as my knitting basket, every time I see it with yarns and my knitting project, I feel happy.
I do lots of handmade things, so I think the baskets weaved by hands are so special.

ちなみに、このバスケットはフェアトレードで取引されていて（←変な日本語かな？「頭痛が痛い」みたいな）、アフリカ（ガーナ）の女性たちの生活向上、そして女性たちが収入を得ることで子供たちやその村自体の生活を支えることにつなげることを目標にしていると言います。
エレファントグラスと呼ばれる草を編んで作るこのバスケット、本当に頑丈だけれど柔軟性もあります。何より色が美しいし、形もとても使いやすい。少しずつ増やしていけたらなと思っています。
The baskets are fair traded, to support the women who weave those amazingly beautiful baskets and their children, and the village. They were made with elephant grass, I found they are quite strong, but you can change the shapes when you soak into water, the colours are wonderful, I love the shapes and leather handles too. I take care of them nicely and I would like to use them for a long, long time.

今日は１０度も気温が下がって、しかもしとしと雨。
明日から始まる学校のボランティアのための犯罪履歴証明を受け取りに警察に歩いていかなきゃならないのだけれど。。。なかなか腰が持ち上がらず、あと一段、あと一段だけ。と、編み物を進めています。
This is my knitting project. It is cool today with some rain, perfect day for knitting! ;)
But I need to walk to the police office to receive my criminal record for school volunteer. Ahhh...knitting is so fun that I can't stop...one more row, only one more row....

My school volunteer life will start again tomorrow, I really need to go.
I am looking forward to helping children in the class!
