to the top of Ambler Mountain

今日はこんなところに私たち、行って参りました。
山の上です。登山をしました。
We climbed up to the top of Ambler Mountain today.

この町の周りには２１の山の頂上があり、ツーリストインフォメーションセンターではその山の頂上にあるエンボススタンプ記録を集めるパスポートがあるそう（有料）です。この間それを求めに行ったら人気でもう売り切れ、秋に入荷するまでは頂上で証拠の写真を撮ってきておいてね、とのことでした。
There are 21 peeks around our town, and they sell special passports for the hikers at the tourist information centre, there are embossed stamp posts at each peaks. We wanted to buy one for our family but they were sold out at the moment, so we needed to take photos of the peak to prove that we went there until when passports are available again.

２１の頂上へのトレイルはブロンズ（６）、シルバー（７）、ゴールド（８）と３つの難易度に分かれ、ゴールドに関しては、１日ではとんでも到達しない、数日テントでの宿泊はもちろん、大きな川を渡ったりすることも含まれる、かなり大掛かりな山登りとなるのだそうです。
There are 3 levels of the hiking trails to the peeks, bronze(6), silver(7), and gold(8). Bronze ones are one day trips, gold ones need a few days camping and they sound quite hard.

縁もない話だ、と思っていたのに、主人がかなりやる気満々で、どうやらいろんな先生方にも話を聞いてきたみたい。ブロンズの一番簡単なコースからやってみるぞ！と、今朝。
Col wanted to do all with Juliett (and me, I hope), he asked about the hike to the peaks to some co-workers and they recommended him Ambler Mountain for the first hike.

主人が勧められたのは一番歩きやすいとの話のアンブラーマウンテンの頂上へのコース。 片道５．７キロの約１１．５キロコース（後日訂正。いろんなサイトによって距離がまちまちなのですが、町のパンフレットだと片道３．８キロと言うことです。）山の標高は１９００メートル、トレイルの始まりまで車で行き、そこから歩くコースとのこと。この間のハイキングを余裕でこなしたジュリだけれど、距離はその倍近くになるし、山登りなので高さにして４９０ｍ上に上るということで、できるものかなぁ。。。と半信半疑でとりあえず準備しました。
One way 5.7km(correction, depends on websites, the distance is different, we received a sheet about trails from the tourist centre and it says one way 3.8km) , we drive to the middle of the trail head and hike up to the peak, elevation gains 490m, I wasn't sure that we could make it because we, especially Juliett, haven't done such long hikes before. But we started it anyway, it was a beautiful day today!

野生のお花畑がところどころに登場。

Canada anemone, we saw them at our last hiking too.
やっぱりこれはアネモネだったようです。すっごくかわいい。

「着いた～！」と思った。

ずっと木々のなかを歩いてきたけれど、２時間後、だんだん木の高さが短くなってきて、目の前に丘が広がりました。「やった！頂上だ！想像していたよりも全然大変じゃなかった！」、嬉しくてあまりの景色の美しさ、これはもう自分たちがハイジやサウンドオブミュージックのシーンにいるような気分。気持ちが良くて、大声でハイジの歌も歌ったし、家族みんなでサウンドオブミュージックやメリーポピンズの歌も歌いながら、エンボスのスタンプを押せる場所を探しました。
We were walking in the woods for about 2 hours, then we noticed trees were smaller, then we were at a meadow! Yes, we made it! We were so excited, it was a beautiful meadow, like one of the scenes in Sound of music or Heidi, we sang those songs and we were so happy......until we figured out that the place wasn't the peak.

が、ない。
We looked for the stamp post but there wasn't any, instead of the post, we found there was a higher meadow in front of us...

あぁ、あの上まで行くのか。。。

そして、目の前にいきなり登場したもうひとつの山。
「あっちの方が高い、ということはあの頂上が本当の頂上だ」と主人。
このときの力の抜けようは表現しようがありません。ガクーッ。
でも、仕方ないし悔しいから歩く。
We were a bit disappointed but there was nothing but to keep going.

また少し下って木のあるエリアを歩いて、もう一度登って約１時間、またまた美しい丘の登場。今度こそは頂上のはず、スピードも上がります。
そして、目の前にスタンプの入った郵便受けみたいなものが登場。ジュリは思わず駆け寄りました。
We went down and up again in trees, about an hour more, then we were at the other meadow!
This time, it was a real top of the mountain! We saw the post and Juliett climbed quick to it!

そして頂上でスナックタイム。
ハイキングの時はなぜかスナックを準備してくれる主人。彼はハイキングやキャンプが経験豊富なので任せています。今日のメニューはクラッカーとチーズ、私の焼いていたベーグルとピーナッツバター、冷えたルイボスティー、いちご、そしてチョコレート。お水もいっぱいリュックサックに入れて運んでくれました。サンキュー！
Col prepared snacks for us, he also carried everything. We had crackers, cheese, my bagels and peanut butter, strawberries, chocolate, and some drinks. It was a very nice snack time there with the beautiful view, butterflies, fresh air, and happy feeling after the hike.

頂上に別れを告げてまた来た道を下り始めます。
スタンプポスト以外人工的なものが全く何もないところなので、ジュリは初めてのトイレ in 大自然 体験をしました。これから冒険をする上で必要な体験です。
We left the peak and started climbing down. There was nothing but the stamp post, so Juliett experienced a washroom time in the wilderness for the first time. It is necessary for adventures.

早い早い、ぐんぐん下るジュリ。
この人のパワーに今回驚きました。やるな、６歳児。

帰り道はずっと歌を歌って励ましあいながら進みました。
We sang songs a lot on the way back to cheer ourselves.

元気に１２キロ近く歩いたジュリに拍手。私たちは感心したし、やるなと思いました。
そして今回もベアベルとベアスプレイを携帯しましたが、熊に会わなかったことに感謝。出会った動物はたくさんの鳥（いろんな鳴き声）とリス２匹。
We are proud of Juliett who walked about 12km without any trouble. Actually she talked all the way up and down, she didn't look tired at all. :) We carried our bear bell and a bear spray but didn't see any bears. We heard many birds and two squirrels.

とても気持ちの良いハイキングでした。
誰もいない山の頂上で歌を歌うのは最高でしたね。
この夏の間にもう少しブロンズの山々に挑戦するそうです。家族で楽しめるアクティビティーに出会えて嬉しいです。
It was a really good hike, I honestly enjoyed it all the way. I was happy singing on the beautiful meadows.
I am glad that we found something we all enjoy together. We will try more bronze trails this summer.

What a wonderful visit!

「会いに寄ってもいい？」とバンクーバーにお仕事で出かけていた仲良し家族から連絡があったのが火曜日。カルガリーに暮らす彼女たち、普通だったら、別のルートで家に帰れるのだけれど、今回の洪水の影響で、ジャスパーを通る遠回りをすることになった。ジャスパーからうちには車で約２時間、遠回りをして往復４時間を付け足して、この山の中の私たちに会いに来てくれると言うのです。
I received an e-mail from our family friend on Tuesday, they were in Vancouver and heading to Calgary, they decided to drive through Jasper and they asked if they could come to visit us on Wednesday.

何もないこの山の中に寄ってくれる、そんなことを言ってくれるお友達に私は感動。
主人もここに友達が来てくれるなんて、なんて嬉しいことだろうね、泊まっていけばいいのに、と。
そうです、無理やりお願いして、うちに泊まって行ってもらう事になりました！
Are you sure? That was what I said when I heard their message, just because it would give extra 4 hours to their already long trip. But I thought that how nice if they could come, I asked their plan and they sounded to stay somewhere on the way to Edmonton, I said, "why don't you stay at our place?".

泊まって、泊まって～！とお願いした割りに、引越しを重ねている私たちはゲストルームも作っていないし、余分のベッドもなく、ジュリの使っているシングルのマットと、ジュリが小さい時に使ったマットと、そしてソファに寝てもらうことになり申し訳なかったけれど、もう嬉しくて、嬉しくて、嬉しくて！
どうやったら喜んでくれるかな、一生懸命考えました。
We don't have a guest room yet, we only had Juliett's small mattress and a single mattress. But they said OK for sleeping on our sofa and those mattresses.
I was so excited about having our really good friends over, I wanted to do everything I could.

お土産にいただいたバラ。最近の気になる黄色で嬉しい！

１０時間以上の運転（途中宿泊あり）をして、水曜日のお昼過ぎにご家族到着 with lots of  お土産！
夢のようです。友達がこの町に来てくれるなんて！見慣れたご家族の車が近づいてくるのを見て、ほんと夢かと思いました。
They arrived Wednesday afternoon with full of gifts/souvenirs!
I was so overwhelmed, can you believe that my friends visited us who live in an isolated town in mountains? 

クリスマス振りの再会です☆
今日の写真はいくつかお友達にいただいた写真です。

軽いベーグルランチを一緒に食べて、ジュリのお迎えの時間。
ご家族一緒に歩いてお迎えに行ってくれました。
お友達を見つけたジュリの嬉しそうなこと。にっこにこで駆け寄ってきました。
I baked bagels for their late lunch, served with some fruits and salad.
Then when I needed to pick Juliett up, they all walked to her school with me to meet her!
Of course, Juliett saw us and ran to us with happiness and excitement.

だんなさまも一緒に遊んでくれて楽しそう（ちなみに後ろにいるのはうちのだんな）。

 S君とジュリはそれから９時半の就寝まで遊び通しました。
主人も学校終了時に残業なしで帰ってきて（この１年で初めて！）、お土産にいただいたビールをご主人と飲みました（そして疲れが回って寝てしまったけれど）。ご主人はお得意のうどん作り披露してくださりました（そのうどんがとんでもなくおいしい）。
私はお友達といっぱいおしゃべりして大笑いしたり、今まで制作したものを見てもらったり、 あぁ、楽しい。２年前にお互いに同じ街に住んでいた時は、いっぱいこうやって時間を過ごしてきたけれど、日本人のいない山の中に越して、こういう時間の嬉しさ・楽しさをすっかり忘れてしまっていました、本当に特別な時間、会いに来てくれたお友達みんなに感謝。ありがとう！

Col came back at 4:00 (it was actually the first time he came back just after school!) and had some beer with my friend's husband (they brought lots of beer too!). My friend and I kept talking, talking, laughing, and more talking, I had an amazingly fun time with them all. 

夕飯はブログにも良く登場する私たちの好きなミートボールトマトシチュー、それにジェイミープロジェクトで気にいったサラダ、ご飯、にしたのだけれど、街に買出しに１ヶ月行けていないので、この町のお店で揃うものはとても限られていて、ハーブが足りなかったり、オーガニックのフルーツが買えなかったり。ま、それが私たちの生活の現状なので仕方ないのだけれど。
I made our favourite meatball tomato stew and jamie salad for supper, we haven't been to GP for grocery shopping this month, so we didn't have interesting ingredients but it was OK.

夕飯も終えて、遊んで、片付けて、のんびりした頃それは、ジュリと私とすごくウキウキしていたサプライズの決行の時間。
先月５歳のお誕生日を迎えたS君のプレゼントをまだ渡せずにいました。来週カルガリーに行くので、その時にお渡しする予定だったのだけれど、来てくれることになって、これはお祝いのチャンス！

レゴの本、役立つといいなぁ。

レゴがとても好き、という様子を聞いていたので、プレゼントは周りの友人がいいと言っていたレゴのアイディアブックを準備していました。それにあわせてジュリはレゴの男の子の絵を描いたカードを準備、そして、私も何かレゴ風のデザート、作れないかなぁ。。。と考えた時に、思いついちゃったんです、レゴケーキを作ろう！と。
こちらで売っているキャンプで食べたりする大きなマシュマロを切って、長方形のケーキにのせれば、レゴブロックになるじゃない！とね。よくあるアイディアなのかもしれないけれど、思いついたとき天才かと思いました。
火曜の夜に焼いたケーキ、角が難しかったけれど、形はなかなか。S君が喜んでくれたら嬉しいなぁ。。と思ってワックワクで焼きました～！
After supper, more playing and chatting, then it was our "surprise" time for their son, S.
His 5th birthday was last month and we have bought a birthday gift (Lego idea book) for him but we knew we would visit them in July when we go to Calgary, so we still had it with us, Juliett made a nice "Lego" themed card, and I had baked a cake, which looked like a Lego block!

レゴと見比べながらデコレーションしました。

テーブルに着いたご家族のところにジュリと主人と３人でハッピーバースデーの歌を歌いながらケーキを届けました。やった！驚いて喜んでくれた！
嬉しいなぁ、本当に嬉しい。そしてみんなもりもり食べてくれてまた嬉しい。
Col, Julie, and I sang "Happy Birthday" song and carried the cake with 5 candles on to him.
He looked very happy and we all ate the cake very happily. It was good! The surprise was a success! 

朝、送ってくれてありがとう。

そして昨日の朝、ジュリを学校に一緒に歩いて送ってくれて、私とゆっくりと朝食をとってくれて、そしてお家に向かって出発されました。
They again walked to Juliett's school this morning and had late breakfast with me and left for Calgary before noon.

実はカナダに来てから私たちの住むところにお友達が宿泊してくれたのは初めて。移動も繰り返しているし、今まで住んでいたところは狭くて、そして主人が学生だったり私たちの経済状況なども余裕がなかったのが理由で、なかなか「おいで～！」と言えませんでした。今回、突然の訪問で、ちゃんとおもてなしが出来るかなと言う心配が頭の中をよぎったけれど、会いたい気持ちの方がずっとずっと強くて、精一杯のことをすれば大丈夫、そう思って「来て来て！」と言えました。
It was the first time we had someone stayed with us in Canada. I worried if I could do good enough but they told me that they had a really good time, we had a fantastic time with them.

来てもらって本当に良かった、 本当に本当に幸せな時間でした。
何度も書いちゃうけれど、メインハイウェイ上でもない、こんな山の中に足を運んでくれたこと、大感謝。
ここにもう２年、３年いられそうだったら、しっかりとゲストルーム等を準備したいと思いました。
We were so lucky to have such great friends in Canada. We will prepare more gradually and be ready for visitors.

いっぱいいただいたお土産の中に、バンクーバーの日本食材屋さんからの貴重なお品物たちあり。 なつかしのココナッツサブレ、そして絶対大活躍のかき氷シロップ、初めて見た抹茶味のカントリーマアム、ジュリにはS君からポケモンキャンディー！本当にありがたいです。バンクーバーってこんなものも手に入るんですねぇ。山じゃ考えられないです。ちびちび大切にいただきます。

今日はジュリの１年生終了日でした。
セレモニーも何もないけれど、まずはクラスのお友達と２年生を迎えられることが嬉しそう。
先生も「また９月に会おうね。町に残ることになって嬉しいよ」と言ってくれました。
主人は明日が高校の卒業式で、あさってまで仕事を少しして、夏休みに入ります。
It was Juliett's school's last day today, she is happy to be grade 2 with her familiar friends in September. Col's school is having a graduation tomorrow, he will work till Saturday then his summer holiday will start!
